We never 'lost' that as much as (by-and-large) no one cared about that aspect compared to the benefits of digital management of games - And as a result of the low demand for physical copies, they've largely disappeared. When talking about pc games ,the resale market was incredibly small (and even nonexistent is a lot of locales). When talking about consoles, the sum you got for a trade-in was typically paltry anyways. Digital copies don't take up space, they don't get permanently damaged, they can be acquired from the comfort of your own home, and they can be easily installed/uninstalled with just a few clicks. That 'lost' ability for resale is very much a result of the choices we gamers (as a group) have made about what we want given the benefits/costs (trade-offs) of physical vs digital.
More generally speaking, physical media is becoming increasingly sparse in Western society (and worldwide). Physical copies of video games, music albums, movies, and newspapers have all dramatically decreased as consumers have generally shown a significant preference for digital purchase/management and/or streaming of said products. Even the ownership of physical copies of books have been impacted (though not nearly to the same extent as those items previously listed). Digital is often just so much more convenient.
