When the wife asks "does this dress make me look fat?" and the 100% truth is "No, its your hips" you'd probably want to re-evaluate your chance of survival.
White lies: harmless lies used to protect another person or for others positive benefit, white lie can be compared to altruism.
Gray lies: Lies which can be seen justifiable depending the circumstances and balance of help and harm they may cause
Black lies: used for self benefit, deception and manipulation
I would like to mention that one should be careful how to use white lies, for instance:
When someone asks you for their honest opinion which could be bad.
You can tell a white lie to make them feel better, but this may cause harm and delay the inevitable. Ultimately becoming a black lie. A deception.
I think deceptive people should be watched. I think they should not be trusted. and I think its a risk being around them, as you're never going to know where you stand. Still, those people have their uses.
where do i draw the line? I can say that if i'm making small talk with a stranger, and they lie about whatever we're chatting about, i don't really mind. I'd say I start minding it alot more if that person is in a position of trust (business deal / romantic partner) and if lies happen at that time, i'm a lot more concerned.
do i think it's always bad to lie? yeah. the more lies you tell, the more you have to fake your life to make it look like your mouth just explained. at some point it's going to catch up with you, and it never ends well.
are there times its ok? - ya, if a bankrobber asks you for your wallet, and you're like 'i left it at home that's why im here at the bank' that is fine. lies to save yourself or someone else, type thing.
I don't think its hypocritical to always be honest, and further, i don't think it's crazy to expect that from people as well.
great topic.
