Employer asking me for my sexual orientation (on application).
So just wanted to know if this something I should answer and is it common to be asked this on an application?

It is not required for me to answer, but would answering be better? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's optional on that form so it's fine to not answer if you feel uncomfortable.

My workplace hosts events and we always have gender as a question on forms however it's always optional as some may not want to disclose their gender.
Choose gardener, the only gender.
It depends on where you live and what the rules are.

Probably consult with someone such as an attorney to find out what your rights are/not and how to play this one.

If you're applying in the "corn" industry... only then it would be better to answer.

Many times the word "optional" is just a thin disguise for anything but that. If it didn't matter it wouldn't have been there.
still think its such a personal matter which types that we ♥♥♥♥ in our bedrooms. including it in every paper sounds ridiculous
Pretty sure they want to avoid dealing with some possible workplace drama when you put something other then usual there.
Answering optional questions is almost always going to be to your benefit unless your answers are inconsistent with the needs of the employer.

Depending on the type of job, answers of an abnormal variety may be less desirable than typical responses.

I would not suggest going down the road of legal advice on something as benign as this, unless the job warrants it (high paying career position for which you've spent years training prior to applying etc.). The last thing the world needs is people running to lawyers because they don't know how to answer questions on job applications. There isn't much to gain from this and lawyers are not cheap.
If your a straight white guy don't give them the demographic info, could only hurt you. If your non-White, female, or non-straight give them that info to help you land the job.

No.

When one stops being broke and working for Mcdonalds one will find that one only gains money from hiring good professionals such as lawyers and accountants.

That is what it means when one leaves the minor leagues.
