no you have to buy a license from valve (or something like that) that allows you to become a developer for games on steam

thanks for telling, I didn't know it is this difficult to publish a game in steam store.

It's not crazy expensive though. From the limited research I've done, registering yourself as a dev doesn't cost anything, and uploading a game costs barely more than buying a new release.

It used to be something like $100. I'm not sure if there's anything more than that per game.

Information should be here: https://partner.steamgames.com/steamdirect

I think it still is 100$

It's still $100.

You should get that game made before you start even worrying about uploading anything and the cost of that. Don't put the cart before the horse.

Every AppID costs 100 bucks. So yeah, they had to pay the admission fee. It's a recoupable admission fee, though.

Means if you sell the game, you get your $100 back once you've made that much in sales. If the game is free there's nothing to recoup though.

Welp. To answer OPs question. There was a way to upload games for free via Steam Greenlight back in the days. You had to vote to get a game approved on the storefront. But sadly it’s gone in favor for paying a fee to upload a game. The page for greenlight is still up though, if you’re curious: https://steamcommunity.com/greenlight/

So if they sell the numbers they expect, valve gives them their 100 dollar back?

Sounds like they just hold your first $100.

So if you sell it for a dollar, then after 142 copies, you still get nothing but with your 143rd they give you a lump sum of $100.10. Then with your 144th and beyond they give you the normal 70 cents.
