What's up with the breadcrumb cliche?

You know, a character goes walking in a forest or something and drops some sort of stuff along the way so they'll be able to find their way back. In Hansel and Gretel it was breadcrumbs.

How about you just, you know, go back the way you came?

Well I've never been to Europe, but I've been in the woods plenty of times. No idea how you would get lost there. Fallen trees, hills, creeks, you'd have to pretty much be blindfolded to get lost.

well in like the catacombs or some maze-like place like that it would be useful

Can be a possibility when you are somewhere where there are no clues for orientation. ,-)
