Where do people drive fast anyway.
The speedometer on some cars--like not even racecars, like Honda Civics and stuff--goes up to like 140 or beyond.

Do they do, like, normie car weekends at the big racetracks or something?

Yeah no wonder deadly luxury car crash are more frequent than regular cars.
Unless there's a mechanical failure, never blame the vehicle. Blame the person in control of it who made an error in judgement.

Good question. Many people say they love a manual shift transmission because they can take the turns like in a race. But where? How often will they ever be able to do that. It's just fantasy.

The point of N.A.S.C.A.R. is basically supposed to be the normie car racing league compared to Indy racing, which uses specialized open wheel cars. Also in Europe they have the German Autobahn, where there is no mandated upper speed limit for the mostpart.

Something else to keep in mind is that speed limits mostly only apply to public roads. If you're driving on your own private property, you can go as fast as you want as long as you do not get into an accident. As such, there are also private race track clubs[shop.advanceautoparts.com].

As for who is going that fast:
People in Germany and maybe some folks around the Isle of Man and a few other places where there are unrestricted roads or where speed limits are simply not enforced.
As a German, I can tell you first hand. I'm actually one of those people that legally drives 140 with an econobox given the circumstances allow it.

As for why tachos display ridiculous speeds despite there being no way the car is going to reach that either way:
Manufacturers use the same components across a wide range of specs and models. That Civic also has a Type R. And Honda also produced the NSX. Particularly gauge clusters and switches are often re-used across specs, models and even brands and manufacturers, because there actually ain't a lot of companies producing these to meet regulations and standards, and it's a really easy way of cutting costs.

There also should be some sort of show in just about every region where car enthusiasts should be able to show off their cars, restorations, customizations...

There should be some sort of regular events in just about every city or region.

my brother in law had a'62 chevy truck that ran a 10 something.

In my opinion, it's one of the coolest things when some fixes up their sh!t and makes it all about performance. It feels kinda like art in a way. Badass art.

we got pulled over one time when he was showing me his new nitros on the parkway

the cop loved the truck, he got a call right before he started writing the ticket and let us go

My car's speedometer goes up to 180 km/hr but I'd be surprised if the engine is powerful enough to even reach 140.

For future reference, type "convert kilometres to miles" in Google. That way you don't sound like someone who doesn't know what Google is.
