Avoid /b/ and /pol/, those two boards are horrible. But boards like /v/ and /vg/ can be pretty fun, and aren't really that bad.
Are people still racist/whatever? Sure, but that isn't a huge issue. EVERY website has that kind of people, 4chan just doesn't police what people say like steam does. Plus keep in mind, most of the time it's said for shock value/comedic purposes, you aren't supposed to take everything there seriously.
And if 4chan is still too much for you to handle, good. That's why they talk like this. They are quite literally gatekeeping their community and keeping out the people who don't want to interact with, and it works hilariously well.

it's why i tend to use it a lot more than most other sites
once you have true within legal and moral reasoning free speech you can be surprised how well it drives out the real fake news complaining people and share ideas both good and bad.
