1080p 240Hz monitor all ultra settings (so still need like 3090/4090). That's how I play games, super fluid.

I have 3060 ti and I play games max settings at 1080p with 90-120+ fps

You won't play Diablo IV max settings with 240 FPS however, my setup with my RTX 3090 can on ultra settings at 1080p, barely.

4k 50-60 FPS by far, ideally with a G-SYNC module builtin to the monitor to keep it butter smooth.

A 1080p resolution at any refresh-rate is no contest against 4K, it's 4 times the resolution. The only time you would want 1080p at 120-165 FPS is if you were doing competitive online gaming with old school games, such as Counter Strike.

The resolution 1440p at 120-165 FPS vs 4K at 90-120 FPS with DLSS 3.0 would be more of a comparison these days. The sweet spot for gaming being 1440p @ 165Hz, but then you have future proof upscaling with the 4K @ 120Hz + HDR + Ray Tracing. You would want the extras in that case with 4K to make it worth the juice requirements. At least HDR 10 (HDR VESA 1000 or higher), plus Ray Tracing enabled with DLSS 3.0 to boost the FPS back up for the time being, if you like had a RTX 4090 graphics card (or better).

DLSS 3.0 Frame Generation will improve over time with better AI updates, removing artifacts and improving performance to near or better than 4K quality but at least double the FPS:

Then as graphic cards keep improving, such as the RTX 50xx series coming out in 2024, it will easily be able to keep up with the high demand of 4K or even 8K.

When it comes to 4K, you don't want to go cheap or fake the HDR with HDR VESA 400, 600 or 800, etc. It highly depends on what monitor you get and the high-end graphics card driving it.

I can play in 8k and still get 120 fps, but I chose to play in much lower res and keep a solid 500Hz refresh
