First, it needs to be considered that Yoshi's Island probably should not be counted as a Mario game. You're supposed to be playing as Yoshi, and Mario's just hitching a ride on your back for most of the game and it spins off into its own franchise with Yoshi Story, Yoshi's Island D.S.. It'd almost be like saying Super Mario Land 3 is one of the best Mario games even though you play the whole game as Wario and the first game in the Wario Land franchise. Similarly, Donkey Kong is considered the first Mario game, and while it is Donkey Kong's first appearance, we are more likely to think of Donkey Kong Country as Donkey Kong's first proper game.

Second, I think Super Mario 64 is possibly the best of the Mario games that takes place in a three dimensional playing field. You have more control over what Mario does in that game than subsequent entries, which tend to focus more on gameplay gimmicks that only last for a single game (F.L..U.D.D. and Cappy for example). Though I like two dimensional Mario gameplay better.

Third, the best Mario game is Super Mario Bros. 3. Super Mario World is good, but overrated by comparison, esp. if we compare on the basis of the All Stars version of Mario Bros. 3 so we have access to the save function and comparable graphics. I don't even know how to begin describing how Super Mario Bros. 3 is better than World since it's just about better in every single way: The powerups are more varied and reserve unlimited flight for a select few levels rather than allowing it on virtually every level in the game, there is more level design variety, tougher levels, the controls are tighter (particularly when flying) and more challenging basic enemies. I mean, don't get me wrong, Super Mario Word is a very good game and enjoyable for a change of pace, but if I had to choose just one Main series Mario game to play for the rest of my life, it would definitely be Super Mario Bros. 3.

Mario Kart and Mario Golf are my favourites.

Super Mario Sunshine was the least irritating to me.

Haha no way, it's the first 3d one but that doesn't mean it's the best, Paper Mario 64 is miles better than it tbh

The term that u used "lack" implies that is a bad thing, which it isn't.

I think that Super Mario Galaxy 1 and Super Mario 64 are the best Mario games. I don't like Super Mario World, I think it is one of the worst.

For me it's a tie between Super Mario World and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The first one because it was part of my childhood and I really really liked that game. For a 2D platformer it is great.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is great because it's just a ton of fun to play through. I got all of the stars on it too.

But I will say that Super Mario 64 pushed the next generation on how to go from 2D to 3D. Zelda OoT is though superior to Super Mario 64 in every way.

Hell, no.

Mario 3 and World are tied for the pinnacle of Mario.
SMB3
Yoshi's Island

Tough call. The camera was awful for most 3d games back then and Mario 64 was no exception. Might have to go with Mario World.
