How do you tell if someone is being passive aggressive?

I'm not one to pander to crazy people who think everyone is out to get them, but is it the tone? Like, the way they say it? Or is it what they're saying, or the look on their face? Or what?

I saw this vid about passive voice vs. passive aggressive voice and I agreed with it, but my boyfriend did not.

He said that someone going, "YOU like tomatoes and Starbucks?" is only one example of how a person can be passive aggressive. That, like, another example would be someone who makes a username or post just to make some person look like they are taking shots at them. I told him that never happens and it doesn't make any sense and he rolled his eyes at me and called me naive and oblivious.

What do you think? Have you ever encountered someone doing something like that?

Passive aggressive would be suggesting someone is too sensitive or asking why they are getting upset. Saying whatever (disregarding their point of view). No offense, but (an offensive statement). Disregarding something by saying it doesn't make any sense and rolling your eyes at them and called them naive and oblivious...

You sound like one of my family members. Very stoic, they don't talk much. He used to get beat up growing up and he doesn't go online and talk shnitzel to strangers, just like my ex coworker Lilley. PoC used to say racist things to him about how white he is and he used to get mugged by students his own age who were PoC who called him by name and they were still never caught despite stealing several of his cellphones. So he learned the hard way not to go online and run his mouth, any rational unbiased person would recognise its not a good idea to take your feelings out on others by humiliating them. Sadistically.

I usually watch their facial expressions. Signs of an arrogant smirk, anger and hesitation are common traits of a passive aggressive response. I usually just call it out directly and put them on the spot to outwit them. It works to stop them from further unpleasantries.
