Is it a sin for a Christian to own a Bonsai plant?
Hi everyone. I come from a deeply religious background. I've always loved the way bonsai trees look in pictures however. I would like to have one in my living room. I find it therapeutic to look at it. But the Buddhist philosophy is not compatible with my religion. Is it ok for me to own a Bonsai tree in my home? Or am I committing a sin? Thanks.

Bonsai is a Japanese art, not a religion and not part of Budhism, which by the way originated in India and is practiced in China, Thailand, etc.

I do suppose it could, though, in the same manner some in the past were saying Pokemon is blasphemous, etc. etc.
What? I'm confused, I can't speak for Vatican Catholicism or Baptism, but none of those wacky rules exist in traditional Methodist/Pentecostal. Pretty much, just don't be a ♥♥♥♥. Only rule that covers everything. LOL

japanese mostly known but it did originate from the chinese same art of tiny trees, yep.
but it's not a part of Buddhism itself indeed. even though there is Buddhism in Japan as well, even though it is not native to Japan but it influenced much of its culture and philosophy
Don’t worry, a Christian is a free person, get your tree, just don’t make it an idol ;)

Forgot about that part. The part where Buddhism predates Christianity. Thank you for correcting me there, I appreciate it.

np. but it would be fascinating if he indeed posed an influence for early Christians though.
it would show that as a religion it was influenced by many other belief systems. just like it assimilated many pagan beliefs as well, it surely happened here in the Mediterranean and i think in Scandinavia as well when it reached up there eventually.

edit: so in the threads sense, it wouldn't "harm" in a disrespecting way so to say if op got a bonzai tbh.

Zoroastrianism predated both.

buddhism isn't a religion, it is a lifestyle
Yes it is. Devas, rebirth, planes of existence...

Buddhism has its fair share of woo. =P

Those are all from Vedic and Jainism beliefs. The Buddha spent time among them, but their beliefs are not an integral part of Buddism.
Well any plant or animal you could own probably had people of another religion living in the same area as its native habitat at one point. Is it blasphemous to grow crops or have pets of any kind?
From what I remember of the Book...
...there was only one tree that was sinful to indulge in.
It wasn't pott
And I don't think it was a bonsai either...

So enjoy - it's your God's gift to you
No, would have no concerns.

Jesus hates fig trees. Though only when he's hungry and they don't have any figs on them.

Really, it was a bit childish to throw a tantrum and curse the tree over that.

That was around the entry into Jerusalem, a week before Easter. Figs wouldn't be ripe for another month or two.

Someone should have offered him a snickers. Unless nougat isn't kosher.

Well while snickers really satisfies, I think he was a bit overstressed from work

He really needed a break. Thus... a kit-kat
