Is it a sin for a Christian to own a Bonsai plant?
Hi everyone. I come from a deeply religious background. I've always loved the way bonsai trees look in pictures however. I would like to have one in my living room. I find it therapeutic to look at it. But the Buddhist philosophy is not compatible with my religion. Is it ok for me to own a Bonsai tree in my home? Or am I committing a sin? Thanks.

Since landscaping and gardening techniques are not religious regardless of who invents or uses them then what does creating, owning or maintaining bonsai trees have to do with Buddhist philosophy or Abrahamic religions?

Why do you ask if owning a bonsai trees is a sin?

It's a BIG sin not to use simple logic.

You sound like someone who doesn`t read Harry Potter because it`s witchcraft.
I just don't read it because it's not even good. Except when used as an allegory warning against the dangers of yuppies and sellouts.

Liar. Buddhism makes Christians better Christians.
Considering that Christ and Buddha said some of the same things to the point where it's possible that they - or possibly the inspirations for their respective mythos - met at one point. Possibly even compared notes or something.

Otherwise the inspiration for both could just be Apollonius of Tyana. Which would be strange considering he was Greek. Then again much like Einstein there are theories regarding Socrates, Plato and the like being plagiarists.

Except where as Einstein absolutely stole someone else's patent, there's only circumstansial evidence regarding the Greeks plagiarizing the Phonecians.

Buddah... Christ... They're both dead. I don't think the trees are gonna care much about your problem.
You only truly die when no one remembers you.
Bonsai had a minor religious component back when it was becoming a cultural phenomenon. It's long past that now.

So I'm pretty sure that if God is going to dislike you for appreciating the cultivation of very small trees, you either need a better God or a better conception of God.

And if it helps at all, as a Zen Buddhist I would not remotely consider you as practicing any component of it. Sometimes a tree is just a tree. Whether it falls in the forest and is heard or not, now that's the Buddhist part...
Bonsai trees and caring for them symbolize harmony, balance, patience and peace. I don`t see anything among those things that would go against christian beliefs.
Worst case scenario you could be polytheistic too.
It's a sin for anybody to own one of those ugly little trees.

True enough...
But won't you think of the tree's feelings?

Think of the tree!

Your keeping it stunted forever.

we also borrowed if not outright inherited much of the Phoenecian culture this is true, alphabet first and foremost. parthenogenesis doesn't really exist outside of insects and lizards.
but Apollonius being the inspiration for both? it would be strange but not because he was Greek but because Buddhism had already existed in the general India territory for at least since 6th to 4th centure BCE. he had encountered Buddhism by the time of his death.
he could influence early Christianity though, this is a possibility up to discussion.

@op: nah go for it i think you'll like it.
