In Hindsight were arranged marriages really a bad thing for society?

Given the divorce rates, people being unfaithful because they date tons of people before marriage so they feel more "theres plenty of fish in the sea, if this person doesn't check every box I'll go to another person" as in today people may pair bond very weakly since they date and end up with so many people before finally "settling".

Your parents should know you more than anyone else, and when you were the retirement system and not the government they tried really hard to raise you right and pick your partner very carefully, because if they did wrong, old age could be a nightmare for them.

And people would be much less likely to divorce as you'd be turning your back not just on your partner, possible kids, but your parents and their better retirement, unless you remarried which under that system would be less likely.

As well as all the time people waste dating, trying to impress strangers, over paying on things to look attractive to fetch the best partner possible.

The family courts, and all the other systems that grew so powerful, grew so because of ease of divorce and people chasing new butterflies all the time.

Arrange marriages were the more well to do class than the average working class. The parents usually knew a lot about the other family, their ethics, their wealth, and being raised in a similar background, there was less to fight about in the marriage.

A society exists for people, so no, I would say not forcing people into marriage is a good thing. Its not like these are the only 2 option. You could also encourage people to not marry 5 seconds after they meet and stuff, while still letting people make their own choices.

Like I know people who waited decades before marrying. And some have been together for decades without marrying, still going strong. There is no real rush and that should be emphasized... but without forcing anyone to do anything, because it should still be a choice.

Indian has a caste system and arranged marriages. The caste system needs to go way before arranged marriages don’t you think?

If liberalism has taught me anything it’s preserve other cultures except for the European ones.

Many a king, queen, prince and princess has been unfaithful and thus proves any type of marriage is not going to prevent infidelity or relationships splitting up.
Maybe like every other species we bar those holding onto a construct are destined to have more than one life partner. Natures way of spreading the seed far and wide.

I'm P-sure that some nations still very much so do this, tho some nations used different systems. Like I'm sure we all heard of Japan's old Concubine system but originally that system existed when the wife of the emperor (or a lord or one of power) could not have kids, thus a surrogate was used.

I mean if it brought peace to ruling kingdoms then honestly I'd still be all for it, thing is in these days, we dont have kingdoms, nor do we have lords of power (well most nations dont) and generally speaking adoption now exists for those that cant give birth to their own.

It all depends on what role it played in a nation, the United States literally never used it so they really dont have any input on the matter but nations like those in Europe, Japan, Africa and those surrounding China and China itself totally may have something to say about it.

The Indian caste system is anything but good though.

Good luck trying to find a new system with such a big population. Caste system, old 60s Beatles haircuts and diarrhea tap water is there to stay.

Arranged marriages offer no guarantees preventing spousal abuse, cheating or divorce.

If anything then it stands to reason that arranged marriages would tremendously increase the likelihood of spousal abuse, cheating and divorce.

Imagine being forced to get married to someone that one can't stand to be in the same room with.

Arranged marriages = organized "child" abuse.

Parents that force their children to get married should be imprisoned.

It's a good thing that in most countries it's against the law to force others to get married.
