It is difficult to find the good ones, because you have to be the judge.. Not what some random website claims or a friend of yours suggests, because your point of views are gonna differ.

Start with Azumanga Daioh and Lucky Star. Good cross section of standard tropes and conventions for the newbie.

Or dive into the deep end and watch Akira and FLCL.
