Even when you're alone with your friends, you still had 'instilled' information and a moral compass to go by...so all the kids you hung out with were a product of their parenting, rebellious or not.
Sure - i just said that around this age You start thinking for Your own, and don´t take anything the parents say as truth, which can´t be questioned. Also being 14 is the age when there is the confirmation here. After which i decided to leave the church, as i couldn´t believe in it. I wanted to opt out earlier, but couldn´t, so i thought i take all the gifts which come with it. And at the ceremony in church there was that other guy, who was a bit behind in development. So i told him at least 10 times, that the pastor called for him to go ahead to the altar. I thought i will never again in my life have this chance, and the whole audience in this church wasn´t that turned off by it, as they all started laughing at a certain point, while i needed to keep a straight, or rather asking, face. That´s the age of 14.

Not to speak of those other guys, of which some sniffed glue, or whatever - or this guy who always masturbated wherever he was, so we encouraged him to do it at various locations. I mean that´s all rather harmless stuff, but that´s not exactly what the moral compass of my parents was all about. And to act accordingly means to know when to run fast, or to know the line at which things get complicated, which is the better approach.

I never said i was on my own - but i used home more or less as a place to sleep, as we moved often in the same city, so i knew people anywhere as i met new people regularly. Friends are the family You can chose. And my parents or teachers weren´t able to explain me the rules. But as i know now - it´s not about my parents, because the officials or people in charge can´t explain them as well. So that´s nothing i can take serious. Why should i? And in that age You start realizing it - or it was like that for me, but also for all the people i knew as well - as we somehow met at some place.

So how does good parenting look like? Should they keep me locked at home, because they weren´t able to tell me why i shouldn´t do certain things, or why i should do others? They tried that - so what i did was to sleep after school, and then i snuck out at night - which made them realize that it doesn´t work either. And that tutor they hired because my grades in school were getting worse gave up after 2 or 3 lessons. What should parents do in such a case? When they can´t explain their own moral compass, which they apparently just follow for the sake of it.
Does everyone turn stupid when they become teenagers?

Yes. Some more than others, some less. Some in different ways. But nobody stays a child - except for a few people.

When I was 14 I was able to watch whatever I wanted without acting stupid. It's vexatious when parents blame others for not taking care of their kids and getting mad when they watch/do something stupid they saw on... "tiktok," or whatever these kids use now days.
I think young teens should be watching videos from LGBT and feminist content creators, so they don't grow into ugly people like many of the users on this forum.

And they should watch content relevant to whatever their hobbies are, just like the rest of us do.

I agree, it happens, but it's by no means a first resort. In fact, being young and leaning on peers for information who know as much as you is a last resort, and a great indication that 'you done ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up'. I would assume you had other adults in your life that you and your friends could've trusted with advice?
No - i´m not so great in taking advice. I preferred testing it - so i know what happens with different approaches. I took those advice more as a challenge if those were true or not. How else can You find that out? And somehow many of them weren´t that good, because it worked the way i thought as well, even if it was said it wouldn´t work, or is a bad idea.

And e.g. drinking in a safe environment is not exactly the same as drinking elsewhere. Also some things are simply forbidden as the drinking age here is 16, but You can easily pay or just ask older people to buy You something. So it´s unlikely that i go to my parents and ask if they want to drink with me and watch some porn together. Or i wouldn´t ask them how to get a girlfriend, these things i like to do for myself, or with friends. To start with smoking was a bad idea, but anyway...

It´s not that i question things which make sense on it´s own, as nobody needs to tell me why to not simply beat up people. Who wants to be beaten up by random people? Or doing certain drugs. Doesn´t make sense to question that. But why should i be good in school, when all that counts is the last grades You get, as nobody is interested in Your grades in the 7th grade. What´s that good for? It´s only to reach the next grade - so why isn´t the minimum effort to reach that enough, to fulfill some requirements? Or do You give 100% at work every day every hour, or isn´t it enough to fulfill the contract? And what´s with homework? Why do i have to be good, when average is more than enough? And why do i have to learn things there, of which i already know that i never will need them in my life, like art history, or French, or certain details in biology, maths, chemistry, text interpretation, etc, while other important things aren´t even lessons? And why should i tell where i go and what i do - or why do You want to know how my day was, when all i say is "As always." anyway, as i would of course not tell if i did anything forbidden? Things like that - but that´s the harmless and easy to answer stuff...

That has not much to do with knowledge - it´s more about experience. And people who always follow any advice, and rarely try something on their own, won´t have much experience - that´s the impression i got. Being 40 doesn´t mean much, if You always had Your family, and the same job with the same routine, lived in the same city, with the same friends which are also the co-workers, and the only different thing to do is to travel abroad for 3 weeks a year or some birthday parties, while never taking risks, as it is not responsible to do so with kids. What advises can these people give? And i´ve met people who never left their birth place for more than 40km. They only know their village and how it works there with the same people. It doesn´t need to be a dogma, it´s perhaps just that they don´t know better.

TL;DR:
Imho parenting is overrated at some age. Can´t harm to talk about things, but doesn´t need to have effect. I for myself found it super-annoying, and most people i knew found it also annoying, even if not all that much. But thinking about that - it could also be that German kids have simply more freedom than American kids, which is not unlikely. Not because Germany is such a free country though...
I really wouldn't care about the content at 14. At that point I raised my child to make good decisions. I didn't care if she did decide to watch something.

It's not the What that I'd worry about. It's the How Much.

I didn't sit her in front of a screen all the time.
Well what do you, or your child, or whoever you’re asking for that is 14 like?
Messaggio originale di chima:
