And they should watch content relevant to whatever their hobbies are, just like the rest of us do.
some classic cartoons to develop your sense of humor.
And e.g. drinking in a safe environment is not exactly the same as drinking elsewhere. Also some things are simply forbidden as the drinking age here is 16, but You can easily pay or just ask older people to buy You something. So it´s unlikely that i go to my parents and ask if they want to drink with me and watch some porn together. Or i wouldn´t ask them how to get a girlfriend, these things i like to do for myself, or with friends. To start with smoking was a bad idea, but anyway...
It´s not that i question things which make sense on it´s own, as nobody needs to tell me why to not simply beat up people. Who wants to be beaten up by random people? Or doing certain drugs. Doesn´t make sense to question that. But why should i be good in school, when all that counts is the last grades You get, as nobody is interested in Your grades in the 7th grade. What´s that good for? It´s only to reach the next grade - so why isn´t the minimum effort to reach that enough, to fulfill some requirements? Or do You give 100% at work every day every hour, or isn´t it enough to fulfill the contract? And what´s with homework? Why do i have to be good, when average is more than enough? And why do i have to learn things there, of which i already know that i never will need them in my life, like art history, or French, or certain details in biology, maths, chemistry, text interpretation, etc, while other important things aren´t even lessons? And why should i tell where i go and what i do - or why do You want to know how my day was, when all i say is "As always." anyway, as i would of course not tell if i did anything forbidden? Things like that - but that´s the harmless and easy to answer stuff...
That has not much to do with knowledge - it´s more about experience. And people who always follow any advice, and rarely try something on their own, won´t have much experience - that´s the impression i got. Being 40 doesn´t mean much, if You always had Your family, and the same job with the same routine, lived in the same city, with the same friends which are also the co-workers, and the only different thing to do is to travel abroad for 3 weeks a year or some birthday parties, while never taking risks, as it is not responsible to do so with kids. What advises can these people give? And i´ve met people who never left their birth place for more than 40km. They only know their village and how it works there with the same people. It doesn´t need to be a dogma, it´s perhaps just that they don´t know better.
TL;DR:
Imho parenting is overrated at some age. Can´t harm to talk about things, but doesn´t need to have effect. I for myself found it super-annoying, and most people i knew found it also annoying, even if not all that much. But thinking about that - it could also be that German kids have simply more freedom than American kids, which is not unlikely. Not because Germany is such a free country though...
It's not the What that I'd worry about. It's the How Much.
I didn't sit her in front of a screen all the time.
when i was 10-14 i was already watching porn and gore videos. like no parental locks got in my way, as long as i had the internet, everything was accessible to me.
