I only got into DOOM 10 years ago thanks to TotalBiscuit's Brutal DOOM video. And I gotta say, I should have gotten into it earlier. The mods are insane. DOOM will never die.
It could be a tie between Sonic and Golden Axe, or maybe Golden Axe could even win because I think (I can't remember exactly) that I was exposed to it at least a few months before I saw Sonic for the first time, but I had an Amiga back then, and I was so disappointed and hated so much the port of Golden Axe for the Amiga that for various years I just was not a fan of Golden Axe anymore... not that I hated the franchise but for me it just did not exist, after buying a system to play games at home I almost completely lost interest in coin-op arcade machines, I just never liked to go out and I just did not have any interest to play videogames that were not actually mine, I wanted to own the games so for me Golden Axe just did not exist.
I know that Sonic was not available at all on the Amiga, but I knew it, I thought that it was extremely cool (and years later when I finally had the chance to play it Sonic even exceeded my expectations) and there was nothing to ruin its reputation in my eyes (I imagine that for a much younger kid who had a Gameboy Advance instead of an Amiga things could have been VERY different lol). There are Sonic games that I don't like but the good ones are just good and nothing can change that. And before trying it I just had the impression that it was extremely cool and fun and I desired it so much.
But Golden Axe was different, it seemed so awesome at the bar where I tried it befoire buying my Amiga, then when I bought the Amiga I asked for it to the shopkeeper and she said that it was not available and she did not even know it, then after a while it finally became available and it was HORRIBLE. Ugly colors, ugly controls, I have seen online thatmany people consider it a good port but I disagree it was horrible.
Even the Mega Drive port was a little bit disappointing because of excessively downgraded graphics, but the thiings that matters the most are intact, it is a very good game and even if graphics on the Amiga are a bit more detailed the damage done too the color plette is much worse than the Mega Drive dowengradew, those colors are just ugly. And the controls are so bad, it really sucked.
I'm sorry Golden Axe, I love you both, but in this case Sonic wins.
And also in the case of Mario, I have to say that I hated aything Nintendo for a few years after I was so disappointed by the Nintendo 64. I liked Mario 64, but basically I hated every other game I tried / played on the Nintendo 64 and I was very disappointed by the console itself overall to the point that I eventually started to hate anything about Nintendo, including Mario too, even if I enjoyed his game.
I changed my mind when people online convinced me to try the Gamecube, I loved it, I loved the Wii even more... but now I hate Nintendo again because of Shuntaro Furukawa and his scams.
THANKFULLY I NEVER bought a
A classic! I love the originals and the remakes/reboot, such legendary games :-D
I know what you mean, the new Wolfensteins aren't that bad but I do agree that they didn't need to make all of them, perhaps a trilogy that was a bit longer with story and gameplay/multiplayer. I absolutely LOVED playing Unreal Tournament back in the day and I agree, they ruined that franchise so bad.
I hope UT makes a comeback in the future but I doubt it. I think it's hard to make an arena shooter like that in today's age of gaming. It would only appeal to those that grew up with it and not so much any of the kids playing today since they're all about Call of Duty, Fortnite, and VALORANT. Who knows, if they do UT right and fully flesh it out, it could be something but I doubt it. They tried that with Quake Champions and that was such a fail.
DOOM is amazing and is one of my all-time favorite franchises, THAT is how you handle the classics while moving forward. DOOM/DOOM Eternal are beyond amazing!
started playing 2003 when it released and i'm still playing it today.
not a huge player base but surprisingly its still in active development.
i guess its their passion project or something.
It does not matter how much they "move forward", if things don't change and I mean A LOT in gaming industry Doom 64 will always be trhe best one, by far.
I'm not saying that Doom and Doom Eternal are bad games because there are so many good things about them but with Doom they made some mistakes and with Doom Eternal they made EVEN MORE mistakes. They made very serious errors in some of the most important things in a game likethis. They completely ruined the pacing of the game and made it feel almost like a mix between on rail shooter action and Metrod puzzles. You explore a bit, you maybe have to solve a few puzzles and do tricky jumps (Metroid) and you know FOR SURE that you will not find any enemy until you complete that segment, then you enter the area where all the enemies spawn and you know that you will have to fight countless demons in what feels like a multiplayer atch oif an arena shooter and you will not be able to advance until you beat all of them (which makes it feel like an onrail game because the game controls your progression and is very repetitive in the way it unfolds just like in an opnrail shooter).
Anyway if you like Doom so much I really hope that you have played Doom 64 too, it is a fantastic experience.
I feel like that there is still more love for the classics than for most modern games. I don't think that 40 years in the future people will still be interested in most modern games (things like FNAF for example) as much as so many people now still love the 16 bit era.
I think that it is more likely that people will still lovew the games that we consider classics today for the most part, with maybe a few more recent exceptions but not so many for sure.
Every franchise I've truly enjoyed either falls off, or just gets replaced by something else. Used to love turn based RPG's, then I discovered Dark Souls and everything changed.
Barely any of the franchises I enjoyed I'm still a fan of or they don't even exist anymore.
Crash Time and World Racing died with Synetic.
The last good SimCity was released two decades ago and I jet have to see city-builders with the wit of Will Wright and his company's. Similarly, the last good Sims was Sims 3.
NfS went down-hill with Rivals and Criterion is too busy releasing mediocre NfS instead of finally creating a great new Burnout - not that the new Criterion could anyway.
There hasn't been a proper Driver game since 2011. For the otherwise unrelated Race Driver since 2008 even. Not sure if the next TDU will be any good and I only really liked the first The Crew.
Basically, any Ubisoft franchise that I used to like I no longer. In part because of Ubisoft games' gameplay innovation being stagnant for more than a decade now and because of the company itself.
I'm no longer interested in Battlefield since Hardline. What happened to DICE, they used to be my fan-favourite developer.
If Blood & Wine was any preview for the next Witcher, then I'm no longer a fan of that (game) series anymore either.
Bohemia Interactive wants to facilitate community content and purchases outside of Steam now, which is a big red flag for me.
Rockstar has pulled too much anti-consumer ♥♥♥♥ to even consider interest in any of their franchises again.
And Micro$oft is the Devil anyway.
Most of the games I like didn't even become a proper franchise but stayed a single game. Blur, Fuel, Schiene und Straße, Rig 'n' Roll, Split Second, Nitronic Rush, etc.
But maybe Alan Wake will finally become a proper franchise.
Only SCS' truck sim franchises hang around in one form or another.
So, yeah. Thanks for coming to my Steam talk.
My favourite franchise is Garfield Kart.
Fallout
Fatal Frame
Bioshock
KoF
Doom
