Do fire drills actually make things worse?
Whenever the alarm goes off, everyone just sorta looks around and asks each other if there was supposed to be a drill today.

Drills or not, you hear it and you MOVE IT!

That's the point of drills. To instinctively do what you were drilled to do.

Drills are vital for fire safety. People often herd like sheep and follow what others are doing.

By doing drills it ensures people take the nearest fire exit and are aware it is there. Instead of taking the longest way out the building where it could already be scorched and them ending up like a melted candle.

The art of drills is to make them regular enough for people to not forget what to do, but at the same time make them as unregular and far apart as possible, so that people don't get desensitised and as unobtrusive enough to not annoy people and stand in the way if regular function. There's an entire field around this.

Firemen are some of the dumbest human beings on the planet. They're uneducated and slow.

Reminds me when I was back in high school we had a fire alarm go off. Everyone assumed it was a drill and all did the routine. We are all outside when the principle comes out with a loud speaker telling us how great of a job we did. But, we all needed to get inside quick because it was suppose to be a tornado alarm...
One day there was an electrical fire and the principal, who had no judgement at all, gets on the intercom and says she will find who is responsible for it.
After she left, the next guy got caught in the supply closet with a staff member.
Nice going Alex

If it's a drill and you are doing what you are supposed to do in an emergency it's good. If people randomly pull the alarm or it goes off because it's broken that's when people lose faith in them.

That's called natural selection. Eventually it will run it's course if a real fire were to occur.

They don't make things better that they cry wolf.¨
The teacher knows what it means. Have faith in the teacher knowing the exit.

It doesn't make it worse but (my take on it) it's completely useless.

To think that peoples are going to behave the same in a drill and when fire is licking their @ is nonsense.
When there's a real fire, everyone goes into panic mode, those who don't will get swept in the panic wave cause there will be a lot more peoples panicking than calm ones

drills work.

while some people act calm and rational many idiots freeze or worse go rampage to the exit.

a cafe burned down. 600 people inside. plenty of time for all to walk out 2 by 2 in a orderly fashion.
-
instead they all pushed to eachothrer in the corridor clogging the exit..
over 50 were trampled to death by this horde.. over 120 died in the flames and another 400 had severe skin burns and will be scarred for life.
none of that had to happen had they acted rational.

stories like that makes get feeling of harmong or shooting at the first 20 getting out and shellshocking them to walk in an orderly line.
but since such a thing is not whats morally ok.. and you hardly have time to talk reason into them.. the next best thing is drilling..

drilling trains people to contioned behavior for when it is needed..
and sadly as incidents like that cafe showed to many idiots in society need that kind of drilling..

Reminded of The Time Machine, where the cannibal mutants used air raid sirens to lure in prey.

not saying one should do that.
just saying that I get that feeling.
I cannot stand idiotcy much.
and people running like mindless chickens.. selfless only caring they get out. annoys me greatly.
if people get hurt because of it even more so.

I'm from a nation without guns..
and a christian who is not allowed nor condone killing.
(bodely harm to knock some sense into them is however totally legal)
dont take sayings as that too serious.
