Why Auto shotguns aren't used more in military?

It's literally weapon that with one shoot can kill one or more enemies, and damaging the rest, while also shooting very fast.
Like, auto shotgun with magazine would is one of the most powerful firearms after machine guns and rocket launchers.

They jam. Military has strict failure rates and they probably don't pass with the ammunition type they need.

Automatic shotguns require more powerful ammunition than pumps because they have to cycle the action with the gas. If you use underpowered loads, the shell will either fail to eject or fail to feed.

I don't get it either, even if you have your military armor the impact of the shots will ♥♥♥♥ you. probably the range is a "problem" but honestly i don't think this is true. And it's not like there isn't shotguns like the AA12 where the recoil isn't an issue

You need to get real close for the shotgun to be effective. Don't forget about the recoil.

it mainly comes down to cost and reliability. Army decision is made based on most lethal for most reliability for least cost. If army hasn't adopted it, it doesn't meet specifications.

AA12 and the others in that field don't bring anything innovative that's worth the $ spent.

you can bet samples were purchased and tested years ago, and the soldiers found ways to blow it up or destroy it, which made them not confident it would stand up to the rigors of combat.

also body armour, standard rifle plates will stop buckshot and harder ones will stop slugs (at the cost of the wearer wishing they hadn't been born, I mean, that's a lot of joules)

Seems somebody knows next to nothing about shotguns outside of video games.

1. Shotgun ammo is heavy, you can carry several dozens of rounds of 5.56 for the weight of a single standard 12 gauge buckshot load.

2. Shotguns are very short ranged. The range on an M4 is 500-600 yards, a shotgun is about 50. Most conflicts in places like Afghanistan take place across hundreds.

3. No, a shotgun isn't going to "kill multiple" and isn't even close to a guaranteed one-shot kill. Even low level pistol body armor can stop the pellets, without switching to much higher cost, and even less useful novelty ammunition, while 5.56 offers deep penetration through any non metal armor, and out of a 20" barrel 55 grain 5.56 rounds will actually penetrate steel trauma plates which is the maximum protection a soldier can carry.

Auto shotguns are next to useless.

Most shotguns has limited ammo capacity and also a very short combat range, where service rifle are just better.

However in close quarters combat like urban or forested areas its can have its advantage sometime.

One of the best role the shotgun have is for breaching and is a important tool for the police, instead of either a hammer or ram.

I think the best option today is the combi option like example the M26 MASS modular accessory shotgun there can be installed on the M4 rifle or a stand-alone system.

Personally I would rather take the M203 grenade launche.

You’re basically shooting pellets at enemies. It’s not as effective as rifle rounds. The odds of you even getting that close to the enemy is unlikely unless you’re in an urban environment and even then there are still better weapons for the situation.

I’m no military expert and this is just my opinion.
