It's complicated. Technically the bible exists on its own as an adaptation of Babylonian law-myths, and the Jewish faith is comprised of commentaries on it.

The romans created Jesus as a mythological savior figure, so that the Jewish people could stop resisting roman conquest. And, well, the Jewish people basically went "well obviously not; you're still here so we're not saved."

Much hay has been made of how a just God could expect them to remain obedient when not having the knowledge of what disobedience and evil is, or why he didn't simply put that tree out of reach of them.

One interpretation I rather like is that God always intended them to eat from the tree when they were ready and had the wisdom and fortitude to handle it. The sin was taking the fruit too soon.

This isn't a problem for Hebrews.

Its a MASSIVE problem for Christians though. If there was no fall, there is no point in a Messiah. There's no point in spreading the gospel when they should take it from the source. If there's redemption after death, there's no point in a Messiah. They can't even answer the question of the Fate of the unlearned.

I mean, the church literally grew out of the Roman Empires. If you didn't give them your money (ie your taxes) they just sent you to jail and then executed you brutally in public.

Huh? The very reason why religion works is because people are stupid and don't question anything. Religion thrives in ignorance as history proves.

"We don't know, therefor God." Is still very strong now but it was far stronger back then.
