(*) Sorry if I'm misattributing this -- to my knowledge, the old testament stuff is Jewish, and the Christians just adapted it and added their own new testament because they are in disagreement about Jesus.
It's complicated. Technically the bible exists on its own as an adaptation of Babylonian law-myths, and the Jewish faith is comprised of commentaries on it.
The romans created Jesus as a mythological savior figure, so that the Jewish people could stop resisting roman conquest. And, well, the Jewish people basically went "well obviously not; you're still here so we're not saved."
"Yes my lord, whatever you say, please don't hurt me." And so on.
no, most would just go "oh yeah? prove it!" and then god annihilates them.
and then this happens so many times he starts annihilating people in public, then people say it's faked.
y'know like in sodom & gomorroha?
etc.
people are insanely dumb and open to a ton of deeply rooted logical flaws, such that god would need to pretend to be limited just to convince them there's some kind of reward for obesiance and an outlet for rebellious thought.
maybe he'd even actually consign himself to an inescapable punishment to prove it to them, idk. the 'god rock heavy if he lifts it he can but he dies' thing is...not that compelling to me.
One interpretation I rather like is that God always intended them to eat from the tree when they were ready and had the wisdom and fortitude to handle it. The sin was taking the fruit too soon.
I guess if you use fear you have the upper hand to say anything you want and use it to enforce your stupid laws and manipulate everyone
If you don't give the church your money, you go straight to hell etc, etc.
He was probably still miffed about the previous incident with disobedient children?
There were other humans around in the Land of Nod. So Adam and Eve weren't the only ones. You think Seth is gonna populate the Earth all by himself, never mind incest? No.
This isn't a problem for Hebrews.
Its a MASSIVE problem for Christians though. If there was no fall, there is no point in a Messiah. There's no point in spreading the gospel when they should take it from the source. If there's redemption after death, there's no point in a Messiah. They can't even answer the question of the Fate of the unlearned.
Religion is so stupid.
The more you think about it, the stupider it gets. Who wrote this garbage?
I mean, the church literally grew out of the Roman Empires. If you didn't give them your money (ie your taxes) they just sent you to jail and then executed you brutally in public.
"We don't know, therefor God." Is still very strong now but it was far stronger back then.
Theologians and scientists alike aren't fond of God of the Gaps arguments. It's intellectual laziness.
