I think it's more complicated than "we like guns". I forget who did the study, but there was an interesting look at the Puritanical beliefs that intertwined in early American culture that developed into a society that eschewed and hid nudity and sex. But then sublimated it into violence.

I wish I could remember where it was that I read it.
