Half Life 6
We should be playing Half Life 6 by now.

Resident Evil, Civilization, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Persona, even Borderlands knows how to count to three and beyond.

Why didn't they continue making Half Life games, other than the VR one for .1% of the gamers? HL2 was revolutionary. Then --- nothing, forever.

It's a sad shame, and doesn't make any sense.

Half Life is overrated and valve knows it. In HL2 it feels like only the magnum and crossbow shoot in a straight line. It's sad and bad.

Yes it's exactly because Half Life 2 was revolutionary, so was HL1 and HLA.. If there is nothing to innovate upon, then a new generation of Half Life has no reason to exist. The reason Half Life remains as one of the best franchises of all time, with literally all 3 main installments being some of the best games ever made, is because Half Life is a geniuene passion project and not a cashcow.

In the meantime play HLA whenever you get the chance to, it's great and trust me you will be glad it's VR only once you actually play it.

Well maybe it's because those are the weapons based around high damage and accuracy, with the trade-off being a slow fire-rate and lack of ammo.
Just to be pedantic.

Half-Life Alyx was the sixth game in the franchise.

Also, Half-Life was groundbreaking. Half-Life 2 was a tech demo for the source engine. It didn't actually get a good story until the episodes started coming out.

Most of the people working on it either left or had other projects to work on. The story wasn't going anywhere.

Valve pivoted their focus to hardware. They lost more employees that were working on the series. They focused more on the store and again with hardware. They released CS:GO and Dota 2 along with the Market.

They focused on hardware again. Lost more employees that were working on the series. They focused on hardware again along with Alyx, after buying CampoSanto and forcing them to stop developing their own game to work on Alyx.

tl;dr... It is dead.

Is it? I think I forgot one of the spin offs.

Half life
Blue shift
Decay
Opposing forces
Half life 2
Half Life Alyx

Are you counting the episodes as separate than two, or half Life source?

Ya but the random bullet spread feels so dumb and arbitrary while most shooters have guns which shoot in a straight line. It's ridiculous, to say the least. No weapon in a shooter is as terrible as the Halo assault rifle, but I swear some weapons in HL2 come close.

No we should not, as Half Life was supposed to end on third. :P

Software companies are all trying to be that leader with a "breakthrough". Back then video game is just on screen display and mario introduced 2D side-scrolling. Games are all 2D and Square introduced a masterful ff7 with 4 CDs, 3D and cinematics. Noticed that Valve is constructed upon half life's success, blizzard on warcraft's success, so on. It takes just 1 killing game to build up a very strong company.

If they make HL3 or FF7 remake today, that 'wow' factor is no more. There is no breakthrough and it's "just another game". It means expensive production cost just to be ordinary, and giving competitors a chance to win. With every half life released that does not 'wow', investors will slowly leave steam.

They have tried exploring VR but it wasn't popular. If it is, then you can bet half life 3 will be an official VR release.

Everyone is waiting for that next piece of technology. Ray tracing might just bring half life 3 to reality, but due to scalpers, not everyone can buy RTX at average price. So the answer why there is no half life 3 - because of greedy scalpers. :erune:

Because Valve got fat and complacent sitting on the world's most successful digital distribution platforms.
Why bother risking your money on a game that will most likely not impress anybody today anyway? THAT makes no sense.

I would have liked to see a Half Life 3... like...14 years ago. Now, though? If it stuck to formula of half life 1 and 2, it would just be a generic shooter.
And if it changed the formula, people would still hate it cause it is technically no longer half life.

Thanks for your insights, folks.

Resident Evil, Borderlands, and Final Fantasy are mediocre. And GTA is going down in quality.

There would be nothing more disappointing than an average Half Life 3.

Valve probably makes a whole lot more money charging money for each game sold on its storefront than they ever did making their own games.

They'll probably never make another game ever again.
