It’s a real con.
It's screened and exaggerated, but it's real.
A group of people queue up to go in the shop for the show and they are screened. The screening entices the people to ham it up so they're picked.
So it's screened and exaggerated. It's still real for the most part. They may even invite in some people with odd items to sell.
Then in another episode he literally disguised a bar as an automotive shop.

they vet every single person before filming. there are no surprises on pawn stars, and you can tell by corey/rick/chumlee's facial expressions and fake reactions when the 'customer' comes up to the desk.
the 'people' that just happen to be 'milling about' in the background are all pre-planned, pre-staged extras that sign waivers.
i'm not sure if they actually film inside the store or have a sound stage set up.
afaik the value agreed on is real, but whether the deal actually closes or not doesn't get disclosed, as we never see anyone sign any documents.
i'm sure the 'expert' is either on standby before the episode gets filmed, or they do the appraisal at a different date, i'm sure they can cut that and make it look like it was all done in 20 minutes.
you also notice a ton of cuts in every episode, and some conversations that don't match up, like any 'reality' show.
Heh, I member one episode where the daughter and father actually got mad at each other about something, they went into an office and left the camera crew outside the closed door.
Mind you what about shows like Married At First Sight? That's gotta be pretty fake or do they just pick the worst kind of people who want to be on TV?
