What Would Happen In Nuclear War?
What do you think would actually happen if nuclear war broke out?

Depends on the bomb. You have to keep in mind that humanity has gone through a couple nuclear bombs in the past. And while it can kill hundreds of thousands immediately, it doesn't necessarily mean the end of the humankind.

I doubt that in case of a nuclear war, any superpower would launch a nuclear bomb capable enough of destroying the whole humankind. There would be no reason to do that against others than the enemies. It would be a targeted and tactical one.

That doesn't underestimate the amount of human catastrophe it would cause though. It would be extremely terrifying.

I would finally be able to stop being so excited for Fallout 5.

More than 1/2 the population would be gone in the first week.

:qr:
the roaches would take over
Nukes, probably
Real estate companies selling space-front properties in the previously contiguous earth's surface.

The problem is...

What is nuclear no first strike policy?
In nuclear ethics and deterrence theory, No first use (NFU) refers to a type of pledge or policy wherein a nuclear power formally refrains from the use of nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in warfare, except for as a second strike in retaliation to an attack by an enemy power using WMDs.

But this is still an interesting read...

There are many ways that could go. For example, if the target of a nuclear bomb surrenders (which is an option), then it is possible that will be the first and last nuclear bomb in the war.

We know of a few leaders that will not though. That's the hard point in this particular issue.

the relevant/developed nations nuke each other and a lot of bad stuff happens, really quickly. however;

i always thought that if nuclear war happened the whole world won't be nuked, contrary to what pop culture says. like there are still places that wouldn't get nuked to due being not all that relevant in the matter, why waste a nuke on a place like burkina faso, or paraguay, for example.

obviously there would be radiation and whatnot that comes into the picture, that can really, really screw stuff up, but well its better than being nuked in the face i guess /:

A lot of variables, known and unknown, would be at play. That’s for sure…
northern hemisphere probably huge long term fallout deaths
southern hemisphere probably new superpowers argentina, nz, aust, south africa

as others have mentioned, MAD and NUTS are highly relevant concepts, so it may not even come to war in the first place and even if it does it may be limited.

but if we talk full scale?
too much to cover.

but as a short example, consider this:
even if we ignore the probable megadeaths, what would happen to farmlands and the logistics of food distribution seems like an even bigger disaster.
