I didn't have a SNes and I didn't have a Genesis / MD, I had an Amiga and back then I was so envious of both those consoles, but after many, many years when they released the mini versions of those old consoles I only bought the Mega Drive, and there is a very good reason why I decided to only buy the Mega Drive.
Two reasons actualy.
1) The Mega Drive is just better, has better games. Nintendo first party games on the SNes were just disappointing. As a child I believed that Mario had to be amazing, because everybody talked about it so much. When I tried Super Mario World I was so disappointed, lol. Super Mario Land 2 is a great game, Super Mario Bros 3 is a very good game, Super Mario World?... meh... I would have been so mad if I bought a SNes to play it as a kid...
2) There are some third party games on the Snes that I like a lot and that could have convinced me to buy the SNes mini MAYBE, but they just left out most of them.
But honestly the Mega Drive mini for me would have been better anyway.
There has never been on the SNes any game that could be on par with Sonic 1 + Golden Axe 1.
You can pick two SNes games, 5 SNes games, 10 SNes games, it does not matter how many of them, it does not matter which ones, SEGA had Sonic 1 and Golden Axe 1, Nintendo didn't have that.
Graphics-wise, not counting co-processors, the SNES had better color depth for sure. The Sega Genesis though usually ran at smoother frame rates, and had a wider resolution (256x224 for SNES, 320x224 for Genesis) meaning the Sega was higher resolution, but not as good at colors. Not really a huge advantage to one or the other.
For audio, I could call this a tie. Genesis had some great sounding soundtracks, like Sonic 2, Thunderforce, Streets of Rage, etc, but most of it just ended up sounding like farting robots. SNES has great soundtracks too like FFVI, Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, but most of the rest of the library sounded like it was being played through a wet sock.
Star Fox and other FX chipped games had additional chips on the cartridge that normal games did not have. These pushed capabilities beyond what the SNES could do. Sega did something similar, but offered the co-processor as a one-time cost attachment in the 32x.

So hardware for hardware it's pretty much a tie. However, when it comes to software, I don't think anyone in their right mind could say the Genesis had a better library. In that regard, the comparison isn't even close.
these tracks are from dkc and dkc2 on the snes, these audios are not restored or modified in any way, this is what these songs actually sound like on real snes hardware. (trust me i used to play these games on a real snes, not an emulator.), these 3 songs ALONE are 100% more beautiful, higher quality, and just BETTER than every song on the sega genesis, seriously. try to find a more beautiful song than these on the sega genesis, its impossible. it aint a tie, the snes wins when it comes to audio.
btw these arent restored or anything, this is what these songs sound like on real snes hardware.
and it just so happens that its on the snes :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6hjG6MCcZ8
The sound thing is up for debate. They SNES tried to recreate real sounds more faithfully but fell flat on its face tbh because the quality was just so damn bad. Just try to find me a SNES game with vocals you can understand. The Genesis had some of this capability too but tended to use almost exclusively synth audio, which is good in its own way and certainly has higher fidelity.
The graphics thing is also up for debate, for the same reason. The Super FX chip did have some capabilities the Genesis couldn't match (see: Yoshi's Island; F-Zero) but the full 3D was so bad hardly anyone tried to use it. Meanwhile, the Genesis was locked in at 2D but sported a much higher resolution.
So really they both have their pros and cons, and are both great platforms. So what it comes down to for me is two factors:
Libraries. On SNES, you had Mario, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, more Mega Man games, more Square (did Genesis have any?), F-Zero, Kirby, ALttP, Top Gear--just about the only genre with underwhelming presence was the shooter genre, and it's not like those were non-existent either. And all of these genres had several games of really good quality. On Genesis, you had Sonic, Vectorman, Ristar, Phantasy Star, Streets of Rage, Beyond Oasis, and I guess Shining Force and Ecco. Nothing else really interested me (or was fun to play). Mostly games that did have a neat twist but didn't turn out as well as their SNES counterparts. You also didn't have as strong showings in the genres I generally like--for example, I can't name a single Genesis racer.
Colors. One thing I usually don't hear as a point of debate but seemed super obvious to me is that color palettes on the Genesis (and the TG-16 for that matter) tended to look a lot better than on the SNES. This shouldn't be a thing at a technical level, as the SNES beats Genesis by the numbers here, so maybe it's just a stylistic thing? I'm not sure. In any case, you had much more colorful palettes in most Genesis games than in most SNES games.
But overall, a game with better colors that isn't as fun to actually play, isn't as good of a game.
So while I can respect the Genesis for being a great system--and do have a number of Genesis games I really like, I gotta give it to the SNES.
Please tell me this game isn't that hard to get through legal means and they have it as part of the sega ages switch collection or something.
