Going to take forever to release, constantly being restarted/switching main directors, and when it finally releases it'll be mediocre at best.
The team(s) that are/will be responsible for game development may also have other projects on their plate (with their own development schedules/priorities) besides development of Metroid Prime 4.
Don't forget, you also had Covid disruptions take place in the last few years. Many long term projects experienced set-backs that are still being felt to this day.
Also note: Companies don't have anything to gain by keeping a project cancellation a secret. Projects that go a long time without any details being released are usually either large projects (in-scale) that, as a result, take longer to develop or they are projects that have ended up in some form of development limbo (usually stuck between some mixture of pre-production and very early production phases - with the possibility of pre-pre-production details [2x 'pre' was purposeful] being in the air).
If interested this article goes into a little detail about the stages of game development:

At least Retro Studios made the ONLY great Donkey Kong Country game, the first Donkey Kong Country Returns. That game is just wonderful.- Yes for my taste Tropical freeze was a big disappointment unfortunately, which is sad expecially because there was no swimming in the first one (if the first one had swimming there would have been just no need for any sequel at all, it is such awonderful game)
Metroid prime 1 was good too. I've never been a fan of Metroid but I really liked itr it's the only Metroid game that I ever liked.
So it just seems that Retro is great at doing the first game and then I don't know they just give all they have with the first and can't keep up with the high standard of that one in the sequels but that's not necessarily a bad thing. At least they do one amazing job the first time.
At least that's what happened for now. I'm just grateful to have such a wonderful Donkley Kong 2D platformer and well even if I don't care too much about Metroid playing Metroid Prime 1 on the Gamecube was quite amazing too.
