Why do we call french fries as it is, if they are from Belgium?
We should call them now Belgian fries.

Or do like other languages do and call them simply fried potatoes.

Or maybe even freedom fries! Because, America, you know.

The most silliest thing to call them was 'freedom fries' back in the early 2000's.

Thankfully, that never actually caught on.
No one actually took that nonsense seriously (outside of a few nutjobs).

this is why fries are served with the french sauce mayonaise.. (and dont you dare to do otherwise!)

the belgians lie to cut their fries rather thick.. we call those in the netherlands flemish fries..

if the thickness is just in between we call those just fries.. but I'm all for calling those Dutch fries.

Ugh, mayo on fries?!
Barf Central!
EDIT: Oh, I missed the part where you said "french sauce". That's much better.
I thought you meant standard sandwich mayonnaise.

There's only two things I allow my fries to be dipped in: Ketchup, or sometimes Sweet and Sour sauce instead.
That's it.

(Aside from an honorable mention to using malt vinegar on the fries you get at a fair. And those will only have ketchup put on them afterwards.)

With the thick fries, is that anything like Steak fries?
Cause those are pretty nice.

Fries are French not Belgian for the first point. Secondly its already named French Fries so why do you want to change it, it can of course be named Fried Potatoes but I do think this name is already used somewhere and can't be used anywhere else. (I don't know how to say in English but its when a brand says that this products' name is only usable by themselves only)

I googled steak fries.. some might classefy as french fries.. but french fries are still square
a french fry usually is cut 6-8mm a dutch fry 12-14mm a flemish fry 18-20mm

flemish and dutch fries are usually also made from fresh cut potato.. while french fries (at least the mcd ones) are made from pototo mash pressed in a shape.

I believe the word is "Trademarked".

Not quite the same as a copyright.
But trademarks is why, for example, a game's title will have that "TM" after it, because only the owner can use that title.
(Much stricter laws for trademarks, too)

Maybe it was because of Napoleon. He saw Belgians cut potatoes in funni square and thought "This is mine now". That's my headcanon atleast.

The main reason of being successful on making something famous or make it as your own achievement, Is to be successful enough to be able advertising it. . .

This example works for lot's of inventions in the history as well, Many people who we know them as the inventor of something are not the real inventors actually. . .

Those achievements have been created by another person before which we don't know him or he/she is the less famous person . . .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
But overall each country in the world has it's Strengths based on it's capacities . . . I make some examples :

- France : Great on cinema and painting, music and overall art, Cooking foods. . .
- Italy : Great on tourism, Cooking foods and Cinema . .
- Germany : Great on engineering majors
- Denmark, Switzerland, Finland and some small Europe countries make great snacks and watches. . .

- Come to Eastern Asia countries : Great on Tourism, Cooking and Traditional medicine, Massage and meditation and martial sports!!

- India(1/6 of World Population) : Great Computer Engineers and Tourism !!

- Africa : Great on tourism like Marrakesh, Still great foods and some sports like field-event ones due to the strongest stamina their people have . . .

- North and South America Countries(Non-USA ones) : Still they own unique foods like hot ones, Focusing on sports and etc . . .

- USA is a nation of world's collected people and it's natives, China is a country with 1/6 world population so these ones have a lot capabilities, Same as Canada and Australia have vast lands for immigrants and these are contains world's collected people through the world either . . .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
P.S : The thing is every countries have their own strengths, You know "Italy" and "France" mostly because of it's foods but still there are other great countries with unique foods on Middle-Eastern or Africa which they are less known because they are weak in advertising it . . .

A clear example is my country which I'm not claiming it's on the best condition right now but still it's far away than what common people in the world think about it compare to what it is when they face with it . . . It's great on medicine, Tourism, Foods, Some Engineer majors and some sports like Wrestling, Weightlifting, Taekwondo, Judo, Volleyball, Futsal and . . .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UG6QdNkm_k&ab_channel=SURFIRAN
The main thing is, Finally people feel their condition based on their Economy and their wealth, You can have lot's of positive points but when you can't advertise them or Export them or trade with them, You did nothing basically, No matter how much you have capability . . .

If you include oven fries. then a papa. Does not fit whole in an Inca's mouth. I say south America.
Few 1000 years ago. Our fries are only famous cause of our saus. If the Irish would have used something else then vinegar, and the american's not ketchup. Then it would be maybe called something else. One thing is sure, most US fast food restaurants, can't really call their fries, fries. Mostly reconstructed starch. Rice is cheaper then a potato.
