I am a big fan of modern Kratos, he is one of my favourite characters of all time.
Generally speaking I would not care too much about the fact he is a dad, usually I prefer simple characters who don't have relationships with others, expecially in videogames, but it was very well made, it was a way to show how much better he became as a person while still being realistic and believable (he is not perfect, he is not good just for the sake of being good, he just want to avoid troubles, for himself and for his son, and has learned to not be an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pointlessly) in fact he is more believable than the older one. And also I was surprised of how good that relationship was, I expected to find his son really annoying but overall he was not that bad and I really enjoyed the various interactions between them and the other characters too. I usually don't like this kind of stuff but it was very well done, and even entertaining in God of war 2018. This kind of content usually feels cringe and very annoying. It is not something I feel the need to see, but if it's nice and entertaining instead of annoying then why not? I don't have any reason to not enjoy it either if it is that good.
