Stop trying to force me to use Discord-An angry rant.
Stop trying to force me to use Discord. It won't work. I won't use it. I don't care what you have to say to me. I don't care why I may need to contact you, as soon as you say "use Discord" there will only be rejection.
Why I despise Discord
Discord is lazy. It's client is a election app. What is an Electron app you may ask. Well Electron is software framework made for web developers (who are lazy by the way as was shown with the xhtml 2 html5 debacle) where it's basically Chromium (Chrome) except it only renders one offline web page. Why is this bad? Because it's Chrome. They could: A. Make a native client that would not be such a hog. B. Stop wasting their resources on a useless client that does literally nothing and focus on some of the other things on this list.

It's a proprietary protocol and a bad one at that. If you're going to force me to use a proprietary protocol then it better be good, but everything else with Discord it's crap. It does't even have end to end encryption.

IRC exists. It's an open protocol with native clients on almost every platform.

Discord Inc. is also a garbage company with them encourage people to harass who dares to like lightmode. Also darkmode isn't really all that good at all. Most darkmodes don't save battery because it's a gray rather then a true black (the moronic darkmode fanboys prefer this) and even if you do have the correct darkmode you'll need to OLED screen to turn off those pixels. And darkmode is known for making text harder to read.

Discord is also a scam. It may look free but once you get large enough you will need to pay up.
And I haven't even gotten to the "community" yet. It is littered with pedos, weebs, furies, etc. And that is before the Gen Y, X, Z, λ garbage.

I have noticed an awful lot of games try to persuade players to "Join Us on Discord". I don't & won't.

A game I played and enjoyed for many years decided to close their forum and move all communication to Discord a couple of years ago

Yeah... I've ran into a number of things that require you to join their discord just to participate in. It's cool you can use it to instantly connect for things like technical support when necessary, but not when you're forced to do it just to get what you are looking for in the first place.
YES! This is my issue and it's not just with games.

Discord has actually been around a while, so I'm ok with it.

What I take issue with is the people who want you to sign up for something that's literally the same thing as a trillion other social network sites that is going to be dead in four days.

This is also really annoying. There's a really good yugioh multi-player client out there, but the massive catch is that you must be in the discord server to use it.

And I don't mean a simple "join servers, do some annoying verification system, then leave" situation. If you leave the server, the client becomes unusable until you join it again.
As long as you are using that client, you are in the server. It sucks. And on top of that, you have to verify to connect your account to the game itself. I have never seen a fan made client demand so much connection with your discord and its really offputting.

Doesn’t Chrome have ties to one of those alphabet companies?

I’d be worried about another Slack data leak situation.

I don't understand how someone can try to force you to use Discord.

They may try, but in this day and age if you aren't using it, why would you start?

Well if that's the case then, don't use Discord, I think we can basically leave it at that.
Read some of the other posts here, some things require an account because they decided that locking away something as simple as a download away in a discord channel was a good idea.

I can't wait for the day discord dies and suddenly a bunch of media gets immediately lost because no one decided to have alternate downloads anywhere else.

Holy bologna, this thread has dissolved into absolute cringe and pettiness.
It's a communication application, it works, don't hang out with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiots, no one is forcing you anything. Seriously, it's like saying "okay guys how do we replace Skype if someone is constantly rude to others?!"
Grow up dude, this thread is already sad enough of your constant obsessive crying. Oh, just maybe we should replace the Steam Forums with something more constructive because everyone is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rude.

I strongly oppose their lack of transparency and their data handling and management policies. I have sent emails seeking clarification on how their data is handled and how it is used and the answers I have got back were not only very delayed (Over a month in one case) I couldn't get anything more than what seemed like scripted or generic responses.

In comparison to Steam, I got a reply within a business day and was able to get explicit clarity on how data is collected and/or used by them and their affiliates. They were helpful and concise. No issues with asking follow up questions.
Steam also uses encryption on voice and text chat, AES256 if I remember right.

The fact forums and community interactions are being funnelled into discord is a frustrating and disappointing trend. Sometimes communities, services or other such things, they become inaccessible to those who don't use Discord.

Trying to get friends or other such communities to use any alternative is like pulling teeth as it's just too convenient for them to keep using Discord despite them being aware of your concerns with their terms & conditions/privacy policies. I am inclined to believe if that is the way they think and shoot down any alternative being offered, they must not be prepared to put in the effort to maintain the friendship/community/relationship.

Oh well. I won't use it unless I can get guarantees on privacy, security and data management/handling processes. Steam offers that in an airtight capacity.

Oh, and you just reminded me of how annoying AF some of them are to be in. Having to go through a bunch of hoops after joining or having silly wait times. Or worse, the ones that make you register a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ phone number to use. Yeah, like that's going to happen.

One of the Discords for a game I was into, and using to communicate with other people has had "You must verify your identity by phone before you can send messages in the server." on it. I haven't messaged in that server yet. And that's where you have to go to get any kind of tech support for the game too. Like ♥♥♥♥ off with that ♥♥♥♥, I shouldn't need to give personal information just to deal with bugs.

Yes people are, whether it's getting support for a FOSS project, a mod, or something else.
asking someone to use an app for FREE support for a FREE mod..

shocking.

Plus this is sometimes the case for COMMERCIAL SOFTWARE!!!! Image how professional you'd have to be to have to use DISCORD for software support for commercial software.......

Meh I don't buy into this new cold war paranoia, and even if it was, we have companies like facebook and google.
