What's with the obsession of forcing people to live?

Have you ever noticed that?
When people are down and want to end it we always feel like they're wrong and they should keep going, no matter what.

How come?

Why is it that society has normalized forcing people to stay alive despite the fact that most of them see no reason to stay alive?

Because another thing about life is that it isn't worth living by default, and that's just a fact. Everyone has to find their own reason for their life to be worth living, so really, it's not factually worth living.

So why do we try to force everyone to just go on?

Because ppl are a bigger liability when they're dead. They cant help the mess they leave behind (well.. they're dead), so we have to clean up their dead body. If we leave their body to rot, they will make the most foul smell, another mess we have to deal with. Then we have to find a place to store their rotting body.

Surely helping their life problem is easier than dealing with that.

Besides, what do you expect ppl to do? Make a commotion when someone wants to commit suicide, and watch how the process goes like its some kind of netflix show?

Someone else will have to pay for their funeral. Their boss will have to find someone else to work. Their family will have to go through sad period, which lower their productivity, and in some case might stop working altogether.

Partially true but no one is forced to pay for the funeral, though. And in such case, only cremation will be done and the local church will take care of that. There are a lot of cases where families refuse to organize a funeral due to the case being a suicide.

Generally life is regarded as being precious because living things are far more complex and unique than their surroundings - a piece of wood, a rock, a brick, some water, etc are all interesting, but none of that stuff has a will or mind of it's own - those things can't act independently, can't decide or choose things, they exist and nothing much more to it.

Something living has a mind and will of it's own - from the smallest ant to the largest whale, it has something that is generally regarded as being precious and worth preserving - once it dies, it will never ever come back, will never live again, it's life story / history is basically gone forever as well as it's uniqueness - in dying, it became the same as a brick / wood / water etc.
Whether "a" life is "worth" living isn't really a factor - no one knows the future for certain, so like hoarders hoarding things that they might or might not need or want later, people in general try to preserve life.

Other reasons might be to avoid people taking a massive debt and then giving it away and dying, leaving the debt unpaid and a big legal mess for the living to then figure out.

Many just don't realise that it's not as bad as they think it is and they can recover from that moment.

Say someone amassess a large amount of money and then fakes their own murder but still "kills themselves"? Lowkey get the junkiest person you can find to kill you for $100, and leave like 50 million buried in a safe. Get someone to film you and a lawyer saying "In the event of my death, I have left this money"

If I don't bother with life insurance, no one will suspect me in on the scam, and also....*laughs at life insurance for myself*

They think you can get over whatever is giving you that pain. And even in if you would still be in pain, it is good to still live, continue your existence until dying naturally. Doesn't apply to everyone of course.

personally, i try to convince people otherwise, but only until a certain point where there simply isn't anything i could do
they made their decision, and while it pains me, i can't force them to stay here when they clearly would rather not

I think it's funny that people just assume "trying to live more = good." And yeah there's definitely conditioning (religious, cultural, etc) involved in that. But mostly I think people just don't have the knowledge or ability to do anything else. We're just biological machines that struggle to live purely due to our 'programming' instincts.

To me, it's specifically the fact that we don't know anything else which makes the overall utility of simply existing extremely questionable. The mere existence of any/all of us is generally irrelevant to the universe. Hell, we don't even know that life itself is a net positive force within that system - it seems the most likely case that it too is essentially meaningless overall.


If someone tried to explain to me how they perceive their experience here, my response would certainly not be the typical "That's not how I see it, therefore you are wrong and bad and now we must reeducate you!"

Some people do seem to always respond that way, and ♥♥♥♥ those people. But NOBODY who advocates for any particular option is always right or always wrong. It's all about understanding the unique case you're dealing with, and the individual behind it.
