Would Thomas The Tank Engine have aged better if they kept the Roland Jupiter 6 synths for music?
There was something magical about the Jupiter 6 rare keyboard. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBroZWQA87c

God I LOVE these sounds and how they made music. Imagine if Mike O Donnell (man it was hard to find that) and Junior Campbell still had composed or had some kind of role in the direction of music for the later series?

https://ttte.fandom.com/wiki/Mike_O%27Donnell

It now feels like a gaping hole in the series without them. Even if the show were to somehow revert back to their classic era of story telling it won't be the same without those musicians. They had the cues down just right!

There was an attempt at recreating season 5 of Thomas the Tank Engine with a pilot episode 'Tiger Moth' using actual gauge 1 models from the set recreating the more complex Season 5.

This is Thomas to me! I love what they did with Toby here.

I loved the old series, I think what "Did it" was the fact it was unique, models and all that.. it was -new-, the moment they moved to CGI, and then eventually, fully animated (cartoon series, the current one.) it kinda lost the magic? the 'real' aspect they always tried to go for :/

I loved the series when I was a kid though. I miss it.

Thanks for replying on topic! I didn't know such types of people still existed.

I can't believe it! Finally someone that can actually READ past a title! I didn't know those kinds of people still existed! Anyways back to the topic:

What did you think about the change in music? I feel it ruined the mood vs the different styles they had even up to Season 5/6 when they went more orchestra it still had hints of the old themes.

The changes in the direction of the shows music. I posted an example. Here's another example hopefully at a dumbed enough level for even you to understand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGpDN0ApCdI

I can't STAND the newer intros with the kids singing. I don't know how young kids deal with it. I prefer the catchy musical theme with the wooden train whistle. In fact remember when they sold wooden Thomas the train whistles?

The only thing I didn't like was compared to Brio train sets Thomas was always much more expensive and they weren't compatible wheels.

It would have aged better if they'd brought in Biggie

hm.. I don't think the music really made much difference to the series honestly, sure it had some songs - and theme for opening/out-tro, but the things that made it memorable were more about the stories - the narrative was almost always being explained, or the trains always saying something.

and though each person has their own memories and reasons for liking it, I have a feeling if you gave a list of 5 things and let people fill it out, that music and who wrote it - wouldn't even be on the list.

but...it depends on what precisely you classify it as. the sound effects on the series definitely made it feel alive - I still cleanly and precisely remember the "coupling up" sounds, to trucks etc.

'They're 2 they're 4 they're 6 they're 8, shunting trucks and hauling freight' song- yep, I remember that too. and the "Pop Goes The Diesel" song with Diesel in the dockyard co-starring Duck.

- overall; I think I stick with what I originally said. The series changed too drastically to really say for sure or no.

Here are some examples of how loved the music was then since you'll be surprised: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrOq2stD6jaMAg-a4_eksiGlxk06JD1C5 Headmaster Hastings Covers. Did you know the classic series had all these songs?

Here is a more general search of Thomas music covers: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Thomas+music+covers

And a playlist of EVERY DAMN classic song and fan covers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzXR91l6njQ&list=PL3gHuyzY_3AzCc3oe5oIUeSHZVpS6G3Iv

Yes there is 156 songs (About half are likely various music covers from the series) The music really did fit well. My favorite were Donald and Douglas theme.

Did you know only ONE episode had Berties Coach Tour Theme? You wouldn't ever hear it again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nok2gZpkxjQ Orchestra cover:

Here is the original version which surprisingly is hard to find due to the amount of short covers.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLkZVUtGoWo

My favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yJ-XJNQKbw Donald and Douglas Theme. Isn't that a wonderful beat? I would love something like that again. I can still hear poor Thomas stuck in the stationmaster's house with that lovely bush covering his mouth.

the change to CGI is what ruined Thomas the Tank Engine too.

It had some charm and originality when they used models and not ugly unoriginal CGI that has no charm.

But having had the chance to play with a Jupiter-6 (and a Jupiter-8) I can say it has a certain charm and sound to it that when combined with the original way of using models for Thomas the Tank Engine just oozed something special about it, Something missing from todays modern take on the show.

Jupiter 6 is alright, had one when they weren't worth as much. Good filter but everything else too limited. Not my first choice for anything.

not doubting it's loved, and not doubting that people put effort into it, but I remind you, the question of the original topic is 'would it have aged better'?

and the original series aged amazingly well, it still looks amazing -today-. and it still teaches people good morals, honest hard work ethic and be nice to others.

It changed, and -that- aged poorly. so other than showing the music off (which is, I admit, good themes/songs/music.) it isn't helping or harming the series because it isn't the reason it failed. Almost all TTTE fans agree it was the CGI and animation era which changed it beyond recognition. :/
Now it appears they have sort of brought back the Donald theme much to my surprise when searching for his music: it's ALMOST got that vibe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCTLY4zKNTs

I haven't watched Season 20 so don't know what that season is like and here is what it would've sounded like in the Season 2 style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPCrXQULH8
Donald and Douglas Season 20 done in the style of Season 2's Jupiter 6 synths.

I think the CGI could've been good if they done a mix between the models and realistic faces touching up in areas that need it and leaving others alone. I enjoy the realistic faces but hate how they got rid of the model era. So in other words move to the modern era but change only what wouldn't break things and leave well enough alone.

Though even within the model area season 1 had the most detail due to the 'gritty' architecture of Great Britain which is what most children would've grown up with IRL so would've matched experiences. If they ever were to go back to the model era (even using CGI to fake it) I hope they use the gritty S1 level of detail. I mean look at the bricks and all the wood, dirt, etc.

You can't not EVER change or you become like Kodak cameras.
