The Witcher World isn't very creative…
change my mind!

The Continent is just Europe at a 90° angle.

Even the various countries with their cultures, organisations and history are stereotypes of the real ones.

The further the world building reaches out to places far away from the main action (outside of knock-off Europe), the more generalised and stereotypical they become - which, to be fair, is understandable from a writing standpoint.

Fun to play games, but the parallels are a bit too obvious at times.

it's not supposed to be, it's based on human mythology of monsters and how they're 'actually portrayed' by us, and what it'd be like if they actually existed, in a medieval world. ._. it's not a 'unique fantasy world'.

I know. But I also know people that think differently.

sure people can think whatever they want but there's only one truth.

=)
It has better lore than skyrim thats for sure 🗿
Don't need to change your mind, given that various place in witcher 3 like skellige or novigrad is a real place.
It is so damn obvious that it's based on real europe.
Well they did all come from Earth during the Conjunction of the Spheres... probably...

Novigrad makes me chuckle. It's like a remix of all Hanseatic cities at the southern board of the Baltic Sea, from Lübeck to Danzig. xD

Tbh, I like it when games take place in my home region, even if it's just a fantasy interpretation.
Are you mad that the Nilfgaardian Empire is just a poor version of the HRE?

More of a mashup of the H.R.E. and Franconia. They even speak some fictionalised version of Dutch - a Franconian language.
Still kinda low-effort, but so are most Empires in fiction. It's either the Roman Empire, the H.R.E. or the Third Reich. Maybe something Oriental, if the author feels fancy, but Empires tend to be not very original creations.
A lot of good stories are based on real life events with a twist.

The Star Gate films and series is pretty much based on the Ancient Alien theories which is based on our history with a twist on how we've interpreted things over the years.

Witcher is no different, real life and history tweaked to be entertaining

Didn't you know: Stargate is just a re-enactment of real events to prime the general public for upcoming releases of secret documents under the Freedom of Information Act. :steammocking:
As a fan who has read the books... No, I won't change your mind, because you're right. The original author was rather blatant with his intent too, as the entire villain arc is a commentary of how certain social systems don't work in reality.

His work draws heavily (and super blatantly at the end) from the story of King Arthur. Can't speak as much for the games, but none of this is a secret.
I still wondering why I bought the games. 🤔
It's litteraly just Poland with random ass monsters.
I thought witcher mutagenesis and the mage/human barrier was an interesting commentary on the segmentation of specialist economies.

Both the industrial working class as well as academics and intellectuals are inhuman, and most of the “normal” people in the middle class are sheep for herding who see themselves as the real humanity and power in the world.

In such circumstances the delineation of human and non human becomes arbitrary, and the Witchers themselves kinslaying slaves who serve a monstrous social order. At least according to the conversation you can have with the dwarf companion, which I happened to have while Geralt was drunk.
