They should've sent Felix Baumgartner up there and have him prickle it with a comically sized needle.

What else are you gone use then missile, it was above the flight ceiling of fighter jets, only missile would reach it.
the lasers america doesn't have to shoot down nukes...

obviously.

The 1 MW laser on Boeing 747 project was cancelled 2012 and eventually scrapped 2014 because it was not cost-effective and practical.
Turns out it was a malfunctioning UFO.
All the aliens are dead now.

I am not a xenophobe or anything, but I doubt China, or any other country for that matter, would like one of our spy balloons flying overheard.

The air force has been operating the X-37B almost continuously since 2010.

It's mission is classified. What is it doing overhead Russia and China?

https://www.military.com/daily-news/2019/07/23/former-secaf-explains-how-secret-x-37-space-plane-throws-enemies.html

Wilson called the X-37B "fascinating" because it "can do an orbit that looks like an egg and, when it's close to the Earth, it's close enough to the atmosphere to turn where it is."

"Which means our adversaries don't know -- and that happens on the far side of the Earth from our adversaries -- where it's going to come up next. And we know that that drives them nuts. And I'm really glad about that," she added.

I also heard stories about that back in the 90's. They called it project Aurora but later on when I had access to the internet it turns out that there were lots of creepy-pasta about a project Aurora and the general consensus is that it didn't actually exist.

But it does sound like a "Star Wars" program that Reagan's SDI program would have cooked up.

1 MW sounds like that could have been the best laser tech they had back then and if they did try it, it was probably a miserable failure. It took time for them to develop good lasers like what Lockheed Martin is making these days.

also the massive multi-megawat laser experiments they do...

so... balloon?

wasn't that the HARP thing in alaska?

except HARP is the legitimate research project that may or may not have messed with global weather patterns through magnetic and radio interference with the atmosphere and aurora is the conspericy thing where they control the weather and talk to aliens?

it's like the same, only different.

When you seriously think about it. This makes US military a complete joke. China has clear aerial superiority if US struggles with a ballon. China was testing new missile systems that pass for comets a couple years ago. At the same time C19 passed. Not the spike ball, but the comet. Comet-19 "Atlas". Coincidentally came at the same time as the other C19 most people know about. Funny how that works.

Its funny how one story says Russia will dominate the west, at the same time Russia is close to collapse. Same things said about China. China is about to become the new superpower (with Russia, amusingly). Yet at the same time we got stories of China suffering from the sniffles and losing 1 million workers in a short time and how Chinese industries are brought on the brink of collapse with new lockdown and what else.

Remember the 2001 Part time Job ? US broadcast to the entire world that it couldn't defend its airspace from some sheep farmers with box cutters. No other "competing" major power took advantage of that.
I expect all the other "superpowers" are going to ignore clear signs of US incapability to defends its own airspace this time again.

Its almost as simple to get air superiority from an unmanned ship as it is from a flying machine or plane.
I bet America would be more interested in taking over the entire western hemisphere than protecting its own airspace from its former neighbor's attacks. Even though we both still have our borders (for now) and the other nation does not. Still they could probably find more use for their vast oceans and oceans of coal than fighting each other. They can build ships and planes and even submarines if they wanted.

They should have been looking around when Japan started to take over the East Asia Pacific and Korea before America did. They should have noticed China' sudden interest in the east. They probably should have been paying attention to the fact that a lot of the Asian countries they were once allies against became much stronger than them and their ally states suddenly stopped cooperating. Maybe then they would notice the rising threat of nuclear arms. And China too. But instead they just sat there. They don't care.

I wonder why no one warned us sooner that C19 was going to arrive. I mean, if we had known earlier we would have put up a bigger security barrier. But nooo, they didn't tell us.

I hope whoever is running this country isn't going to start building aircraft carrier defenses out on the coast because this won't be a good idea for anyone. If they ever do that, I'll leave. I'm not even sure I want to stay here after this. I mean, if I can't fly my planes then I might have to move somewhere. Someplace where no one is trying to kill me every day and where people actually enjoy living.
It wouldn't be funny if the thing popped open when some of it hit the ground, with wasps that had somekind new aids virus.

lasers?

it's extremely interesting how the chinese seem to have designed this balloon to be just out of the operational altitude of US fighters though, isn't it?

like... hmmm.... what do?

Hopefully the pentagon realizes we have an achilles heel and will do something about it.

We need powerful lasers that can shoot stuff down at higher altitudes.

Lasers would also be much cheaper than fueling a jet fighter to go up past 50,000 feet and launch a missile at something.
I posted about that earlier. And F-22, which has a ceiling over 52,000 feet was used to shoot an AIM-9X Sidewinder. The range of the missile is up to 22 miles.

why even use a plane? don't they have SAMs?
