In Morrowind, the devs learned that quantity does not equal quality, and they moved away from the massive, almost completely empty procedurally generated world that was larger than the UK for one smaller, more focused, and better designed, and they absolutely hit the nail on the head with Morrowind. While some aspects of the combat could have been improved, it's a far more open, versatile, and flexible game than consecutive games in the series. One could argue (and I would probably agree) that Oblivion was probably the best balance of freedom and complexity, but Skyrim went past the mark and ended up being too oversimplified.
I haven't played Daggerfall for more than a few hours, but it seemed to be on the other end of the spectrum... too free, too complex that it hindered a lot of the enjoyment. Morrowind and Oblivion seem to be the happy middle ground depending on what you are looking for. I just finished a Morrowind main quest playthrough a couple months ago using OpenMW and a few visual tweaks, still a ton of fun today.
Sorry. I didn't realize the subject was that touchy for you. I mean, I knew it kind of was. I didn't think that much though.
Don't get me wrong Morrowind is the best Elder Scrolls if i had to chose between Daggerfall and it it would be pretty hard because i enjoy both for entirely different reasons. But Morrowind really is a solid game in general, much more than Daggerfall in many ways.
Perhaps?
