Are (potato) chips a scam????
I live in Denmark.

The most popular brand of chips is called Kims.

They recently started putting stickers on their products saying the bag(s) now has 50% less metal.

And I go - okay so they're trying to paint themselves as being pro sustainability or whatever.

But here's the thing: the bag is still at least 50% bigger than it needs to be.

We all know this. It's like that with every brand of chips. The bag is always like 50% air.

So yeah Ngl i find it hard to believe they actually care about the environment.

I suppose to the question is this

Why are potato chips bags at least twice as large as they need to be?????

If it wasn't a scam when they weren't made of real potatoes, when 55% of the bag was air, when they were sold to me stale or using low-grade ingredients and preservatives, then they DEFINITELY were when they starting charging me 5 Canadian dollars for them.

Potato chips are not a scam. They fill the bags up with nitrogen to serve as something referred to as "slack fill" which protects the chips from being broken and ground into dust in transportation.[www.yahoo.com] Also, the potato chips are required to have their net weight printed on the bag by the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act of 1966, so you always have an idea of how much food you are getting when comparing like products.

This "scam" would only work once until you get an idea of how much food you get when buying 4 ounces of potato chips. Slack fill fruad cases are routinely filed, and routinely dismissed in court.[www.bilzin.com] Also, no, it is not because the system is corrupt. It is because slack fill works. Matpat did an experiment which confirmed this in Food Theory: Are Doritos a Rip-Off? He not only confirmed that slack fill worked, but he also confirmed that they packed in the optimal number of chips to minimize breakage.

He also brings up another point. Even though slack fill is meant to prevent the chips from breaking, it is far from a perfect system. The bags are likely filled to the brim at the factory, but by the time the product reaches you, most of the chips are broken regardless, and those broken chips consume less volume so the bag looks emptier by the time it reaches you than it did at the time it was filled.

There is no scam here: Just ignorance of industry standard practices and the reasons behind them.

Just admit it. You work in the industry and you're upset people are catching on.

You're like that Admiral Popup on some sites. You won't get me to disable Adblock Plus - ever.

Nah man, I am a filthy N.E.E.T. Your refusal to accept verifiable facts makes me rather suspicious of you though. I am beginning to suspect you might just be a Pringles salesman in disguise, trying to ease us into the idea of buying reconstituted potato slurry in perfectly form fitting cardboard tubes or something.

We're going to need evidence, stat! Potato chips have been declared a scam.

Big bags, small quantities. Total bullsh!t.
They used to have on chip bags product is sold by weight not by volume some settling will occur during shipping and handling.

So you get the full weight that it says on the front of the bag. Also room is made to put nitrogen gas in the bag to keep them fresh as oxygen is foods natural enemy.
Imagine actually buying into the meme that the air in the bags is necessary. It is not you nincompoops.

You know what his already as the store shelves do have bags of chips on them which are significantly less air filled.

The error of your ways is literally in front of your very eyes.

First of all that's the best definition of Pringles I've ever seen.

Secondly - Pringles are among my favorite chips. I just hate the fact that it's all the same 3-4 varieties here because there are so many others which are damn good - like Tzatziki flavor.

My friend. You are a patient man to have done your research. However.........

Why have you not considered the simple fact that other brands than the popular ones do in fact have virtually no air in the bags at all and still feel taste and smell perfectly fine?

This is proof of the scam.
I heard that people that hate the empty space in chip packaging are usually stinky.

I can explain that. When we achieve 100% completion, we tend to suck one of our fingers as to allow for the next step - which is running it through the bottom of the bag - one end to the other - allowing for all of them delicious seasonings to not go to waste.

Call me an animal. I don't care. That ♥♥♥♥ is delicious.

The weight is usually what they are sold in, the bag has air to help protect the delicate chips during transport - you wouldn't want to buy a bag of completely smashed chips right ?

air acts as a cushion or else the chips get crushed.

Pringles has that space age can but it's patented. So unless you make a very effective aluminum can / bag in another design we're staying with thin baggies filled with air to also preserve the chips.

Same with pizza boxes. Once someone invents a 100% circular pizza box skys the limit and they'll make a lot of money and save a lot of money on companies who spend 1000000 of $$$$$ every year on million of pizza boxes.

Pringles definitely has the least scammy design for sure. It's patented? That sucks. Imagine if all manufacturers used that design. Then there would not be any scam and the world and would be in a much better place and this thread wouldn't exist.
Whenever I buy socks, they’re completely empty. Where my candy?

How much are they per pound compared to the bagged ones?

At this point, you are better off making your own. Buy potatoes. Cut them very thinly. Use some oil in a pan
