But you already nailed the best. It's OG Dark Souls. Far and away.
The maps are really all the game has going for it, because they're such a pleasure to look at and experience while trying to get over the busted af janky game mechanics.
That is a fact.
I played 1 first, I also liked it, but 2 was just much better in my experience. Cannot recommend it enough.
And Control:

That one is amazing, but I didn't even have that one in mind, I meant the previous mansion in the 4th mission. I have no idea how the hell they managed to pull that one off, they're crazy geniuses.
IMHO it's never gotten any better than Hollywood Holocaust and Red Light District in Duke 3D.
It's may not seem like much now, but when that came out, with those areas and how interactive they were, gamers ♥♥♥♥ their pants.
For idtech 2, The Black Cathedral, Curse of Osiris, Temple of Moon and Palace of Hate.
The Abyss, Rabid Transit and Critical Mass are the most elegant Duke maps, IMO.
I only played a bit of Dark Souls, but what I saw has nothing on Tairon City and the Temen-ni-gru.
