People are pretty divided about keeping pitbulls as pets. A lot of people say they're too volatile and too much of a risk, especially if the pitbull is a family dog that is around small children.

But on the other hand, a lot of people say that it's not the breed that makes a dog do something horrible, it's all about how you raise them.

I've heard some pretty gnarly news stories of pitbulls attacking their own family members... in one instant they just turned vicious and decided to attack, for an unknown reason.

But what are your guys' stance on this breed of dog? If you had a pitbull for a long time, and then had a child... would you trust the pitbull being around your baby?

I honestly don't know what my stance is... I'm kinda torn between both sides. But I personally wouldn't trust a pitbull (or any big/strong dog...) being close to a child. Even if they seem super friendly and harmless

I think threats to the ecosystem like Cats should be more highly regulated then something that can mainly just kill its owner or like a pitbull or rattlesnake. Although I probably wouldn't recommend either as pets unless you already have experience with them some other way.

They were bred first for bull-baiting and then later for fighting. Even diluted by casual breeding, they are still far more aggressive than other breeds. I remember last decade they accounted for like 60% of the total dog attacks.

Most people that say they are being maligned are confusing how their animal responds to them, it's food source and pack, for how it acts towards anything it considers foreign, or worse, hostile.

Imho all pets should be outlawed. I guess those have more and better food than the whole third world combined. Not to mention some breeders and the business behind it, even if some may do it "right". Probably there are better ways to spend money than to own some living being just for the sake of it, or out of boredom, or "we always had a pet".

Now i don´t know if there´s an extra English word for those "pets" which actually do work, like police dogs, or those guide dogs, etc. I for myself understand "pet" as those, who don´t actually work. I don´t think "livestock" has the same meaning for the others - but i´m unsure.

Nothing but bad experiences with 'em, and they're statistically the most violent breed. People should require training to own them, because it seems like Pitbull owners either want a masculine dog and have no idea how to train them, or they're the "Pitties are so misunderstood mine is a sweetheart" types that act shocked when it mauls someone.

It is know to be more aggressive for a reason, however that does not mean it will be aggressive. Honestly the little kick me dogs are the most aggressive, but people overlook that since they are small.

It’s the kind of dog that needs a good guy behind. A responsible one. But like anything popular, it attracts many kind of people including manchilds that get one to look cool.

Pitbulls are fine. The only time my Pitbull got attacked he literally ran into a corner and ♥♥♥♥ himself. He didn't understand aggression at all. It's how you raise them.

I was attacked by a pitbull twice, and needed 6 surgeries to repair all the damage. But so what? I have been attacked by many more people than pitbulls. People are much more problematic than dogs, and when such people get a pitbull it can be dangerous. But any breed of dog can be dangerous if it isn't handled right.

Shelters are always chock full of pitbulls for a reason.
