When is a Fps shooter good?
What does a fps shooter have to provide to be good in your opinion? First person games are in general more immersive becaude everything is directly in your face but simple shooty shooty like cod doesn’t do it for me. If you take games like stalker, fear, farcry 5 etc they make something to make this formula interesting. For some of you good gunplay is the most important thing

Modern Warfare 2019 is the gold standard for good fps
ah yes, ♥♥♥♥ map design, too loud footsteps, camper problem, dead silence as a field upgrade, spec ops is horrible and lack of content at launch. "Golden standard". It's bad even though campaign was great.

call of duty an arcade shooter ? I don't know , the one I tried where more like ''cinématic'' shooter then arcade shooter. (well , at the very least COD single player campaign are cinematic experiences)

if you say the words Arcade and Shooter toguether , for me it's more like Time Crisis and the House of the Death or Blue Estate that come to my mind , not call of duty. xD

cod was always considered an arcade shooter. it makes sense to call it an arcade shooter since call of duty had mechanics that reward the player for doing something simple as killing people without dying (killstreaks.) plus everytime you kill a player, you would see "100+" or whatever on the screen even though there's really no reason to show how many points you killed someone. ofc, i am referring to online call of duty. singleplayer call of duty has a different atmosphere for story telling purposes.

the other games you mentioned can be considered as arcade shooters but if we want to be specific those are rail shooters.
cod used to be an arcade shooter but now you gotta sweat even in casual gamemodes just to enjoy it :steamfacepalm:
Good level design, good gunplay, good enemies to use those guns with, and, optionally, immersion.
For every one of those except immersion, Doom Eternal is a master class, every gun is fun to use, the noises are all distinct and every enemy and even parts of the levels play into the combat puzzle. More gamers will probably prefer the more casual nature of Doom 2016, but that nails immersion a bit more with the more intense atmosphere and completely 1st person experience.

My favorite shooter to date is probably Borderlands, because of its humor and looks. Before that, I might have said Serious Sam.
If you like borderlands might I make a suggestion for you to check out The Outer Worlds. It was done by obsidian entertainment, the people behind New Vegas. It's a much better shooter than borderlands, a lot of interesting characters that can join your crew, and you're going to want to read the descriptions of everything you pick up and because the universe is just so weird and funny.

Now on to the question what makes a good FPS. Well I would say the shooting would have to be on point. Literally. But I would love it to have a fairly robust character customization and variety of weapons with their own customization. So something like Deus ex human revolution. That's one of my favorite games.
A good FPS needs to fulfill three or more of the following criteria, with the most important listed first:

-smooth, responsive, intuitive controls/mechanics (you'd be surprised how games screw this up)
-intelligent AI
-visceral, satisfying combat (top-notch particle effects, physics, ragdolls, sound effects, etc)
-great level design
-meaningful innovation
one game I always found to stand out from the rest Is Return To Castle Wolfenstein.

the game has super naturals things going on but you get plenty of levels with humans enemies.

The soundtrack is amazing and fit the gameplay very much , the level design is filled with secrets you might miss on your first time playing it , the A.I is very competent for such an old game and the level design doesn't have any important flaws.

it doesn't have health regen but is usually very generous with healing items.

Hundreds if not thousands of hours in means it's a good FPS game... H&G, Arma 2 & 3, etc...
Yeah I know just playing. There is a reason why I got 2000+ hours on Team Fortress 2.

Afk for lootcrates

Not all games give lootcrates for AFK... I have near 2000+ in Heroes & Generals and there's no such thing like that in the game... it's all playing.
A game is good when you enjoy it. Entertainment and art (vidja gayms ared art bruh) is wholly subjective.

Nobody noticed the manifesto on FPS games that culminated with a 50 Cent song?
which 50 Cent song?

very productive singer.
Weapon variety that exists for a reason rather than to just have many weapons for the sake of it

If it has any kind of paid DLC, its cosmetic in nature only

It has very little to absolutely no RNG elements if its a PvP game (this one is highly subjective but I personally just do not enjoy genres which put a heavy emphasis on luck)

The game is simple to pick up and understand but hard to actually get great at playing
