When your car needs $2000 of repairs, just remember...
if it were a Chevrolet, it would need $2000 of repairs every month.

People talk about the depreciation when you drive a new car off the lot, but they don't talk about the maintenance costs included in buying a used car.

Ironically I think that's how much my next repair is in the next few days.
Engine filter issue for mine. Eek! (New car in 6-12 months, already ordered) :marijacooing:

EDIT: Current car is 15 years old and no mechanical issues until now; Honda Jazz. It had a good run and got more than the value I wanted.

You should've followed your first idea and bought a new car

Nah. In my case, the new car would have cost about $20k more. That's assuming I didn't finance it. So I'm actually still coming out way ahead.

Didn't get the free one from the VGA giveaway. I'll be buying mine for real probably mid next year if I save up properly.

The first car I bought cost the same as a 64gb Steam Deck in Canadian Pesos currency, for the entire car.
How much was the horse to pull it?

Okay, this is an official Devsman thread. I'll share.

My first car was a station wagon, but I drove it 110 mph and blew the engine...

My second car though was a Honda Civic Hatchback. It wasn't much to look at. So I added a switch (via adhesive) to the dashboard that said "Booster Rocket". It was a legit switch. And I had a lot of fun yelling, "Don't touch that!" when someone got curious about it.

I would also have fun telling people that there was a horn button somehow installed underneath the fabric lining on the ceiling of the cabin. They would look at it. I would press the spot. And press the the horn with my other hand. They were amazed!

Good times with a sh!tty college car.

If I understand my economics like I think I do, seems it should more or less even out. After all, you sell a car when it starts becoming too expensive to maintain, so the sale price would have to be a point of indifference on the depreciation/maintenance curve. That's of course assuming a lot of things are ideal when in practice they won't be.

Car generally are a money pit but you really need to take into account the convenience or travelling, especially if you need it for work along with the division of costs as you use it for each year. So a $20-40K car that may last you 10 or more years will cost you $2-4k a year. (Not including rego, insurance and petrol of course).

And it's also costs vs labour to walk or find alternative means to travel. Then again, if you are really tight on a budget then there are second hand cars or even motorbikes/scooters.
