New to Anime (recommendations) What is worth watching?
Title.

I remember seeing Akira many years ago.

Then I saw "Ghost in the Shell" right after it was released (a friend imported it on VHS).
Then I got disinterested when nothing new and cool came out in the immediate aftermath.

Has there been made anything as cool and as good as "Ghost in the Shell" since then (or at least something similar in quality)?

Remember, I'm a Gen X, so don't recommend me Pokemon and stuff like that. When Pokemon came out I was already an adult.
I'm talking about really good stuff here.
I watched the whole Castlevania series on Netflix and enjoyed that quite a bit.

I want to see good Anime films wIth well thought out adult protagonists and antagonists.
Post-Apocalyptic themes. Mechs. Dark Fantasy. Sci-Fi. You name it !

Also I'm trying to stay clear of cliche plots and characters. If you guys can recommend me something good to watch this Christmas. I would appreciate it.

I don't know the Anime-scene and I have no idea on what is going on these days.

Edit:

Sorry for my bad English (I'm Scandinavian)

I can't stand Evangelion. Jesus... I tried watching it multiple time but the protagonist is such at a high level of annoying I just cant. I get the whole trauma thing but jesus... carry on already with the story. XD

Shigurui is way too tame.

Today anime seems so stalled and watered down, where every common denominator and stereotype repeats itself.

The old macross series.
Ghost in the Shell.
Akira.

These are good recommendations, because they are classics. Although you have to like the theme.

Watch JoJo Bizarre Adventure 1 - 4

You will probably enjoy part 4 more than the others because it is the more original and mature, but in my opinion they are all great (part 4 is probably the best one in fact though) and you will enjoy part 4 much more if you have watched the others.

Part 6 could have been great too but let's say Netflix didn't treat it very well, expecially the first 12 episodes they butchered them.
Well... Since Ghost in the Shell, there have been multiple series, a couple of movies in the franchise. I highly recommend standalone complex 1 and 2, and the individual 11 movie.

As for other new stuff. Mobile suit Gundam iron blooded orphans is a great mech show.

Yeah, waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too realistic if you ask me. I love everything else but I ended up skipping every time he started crying because it lost all it's impact after the 10th time.

it's "high IQ anime" for sure. not for everyone.

I don't like what you imply. Tell me, how much IQ it takes to listen to a kid cry for multiple episodes?

It's not that I dont understand the reason its that it loses all impact when its been over 10 times in almost the same amount of episodes.

"High IQ" is a slang for watching kid cry or what?
