Why are the Dead Space movies so underrated?
In my opinion, they are kinda interesting, especially the Downfall. It's before the first game and it shows pretty great what was before Isaac, Kendra and Hammond came to the Ishimura. Or only I might be such a fan to think it's great? :(

One of the best scenes in the film, tbh. I wanted her to survive... but oh well.
Only Issac is allowed to live. All others die.
And ellie.

Aftermath has 5.5, Downfall has 6.3 points on IMBD. Downfall is my favorite tho. I have watched it again, that part when the fair hair guy cuts in half the blue haired girl is still the most disturbing one imo :((

Watch Dead Space: Downfall first, then Dead Space: Aftermath. Chronological order.

Your welcome. Also, Downfall is set before the events of the first Dead Space game, while Aftermath is set after the events of the first DS, but before the 2nd game, plot-wise.

Yeah Hobo, they're real good.
The Dead Space movies suffered from the same fatal flaw as any videogame movie does: they have no real protagonist. No character people can really identify with.

Non-gamers cannot be expected to understand a game; they don't know what it's like to be Issac Clarke, or Master Chief, or whoever. It's not an experience they are familiar with, and so they need to be led into a story with a character who is (thus far) only an ancillary character. The protagonist has already been established, there can be no heroes, because you are the one who puts whatever plot to rights.

Sucks for them, they don't get to identify with the true hero, but it also sucks for us. We are the heroes of the story, in all our varied styles of gameplay, and when the hero acts in a way not like what we'd want them to we get the same disconnect. Maybe you're an expert shot, and you can kick all necromorph a$$ with nothing but a Plasma Cutter. Maybe you rely on more strategic gameplay. Maybe you can use the hell out of the TK module. Hardly matters, the people in the movies are NOT you.

And so these kinds of movies are forced to deal with that dual-disconnect from common human empathy. They mostly serve to flesh out what expectations the fanbase already has, especially in low-budget movies like those. People who really like killing necromorphs and identify with the whole universe love them. I liked them for a time, but the universe just wasn't my thing. Too pessimistic.

What are you left with? An under-rated film series? It was under-rated from the get-go because it was designed to appeal to those who loved the universe and wanted more backstory. Nothing wrong with that, and it speaks volumes to Dead Space's appeal as an art that it was even made into a film series, but don't expect more than what it can deliver. It's not under-rated, it's rated by the people who love it.
Very well said C4.

I saw them on Netflix...not sure if they are still there as we dont have Netflix anymore. You guys that do should check it out though.
I liked the comics. I remember waiting anxiously for each issue.
