"Please sign in to confirm your age." Is it a pointless security measure?
This is something i've always wondered; why do websites and the like have this in the first place?

-Edit- Found an answer to this question. Thanks to everyone who posted their thoughts about this -- it has helped my understanding of this feature.

So let me make sure i'm comprehending this right... person puts in false into to a site that has this feature, tries to blame the site for "inappropriate content, etc"

Stop there.

It's so the site can't be sued because the underage saw that stuff.

Oh, ok then. Now I get it; thanks for the clarification.

But still, underage people can still bypass it very easily, just add fake stuff and you're good to go

But now they can't get sued from it. That's why it's there. There is a reason sites ask for age from time to time. If it was just a silly feature with no consequences it wouldn't be used.
What do you mean sued? Like some kind of a punishment thingy?

Because the system is in place, they can't be sued for not taking "measurement" to warn of the adult content ahead. Doesn't work but they can say "we warned you, and we checked"

It's like when a mall has a "wet floor" sign up, even if you fall, they've warned you so can't Sue, if they didn't, you can get money off them for the injury.

Do people actually use their real age on those?

I don't, your D.O.B. is part of your identity, why give it out to everybody?

It's just so Valve can avoid responsibility if an underage person buys a m game

Well it's quite amazing how so many people on Steam happen to be born on the first January 1979. You would not believe how many people are born on that day.

So strange, I wonder how did that happen.

It's not protection for the child, rather a legal requirement to cover the owner of that material from getting sued.

Understand...

Kids want to watch adult content.

Parents want to sue company for letting their kids watch adult content. Because they can't be bothered monitoring the kids themselves.

Company doesn't wish to get sued, therefore asks for age.

Kid will fake age, no doubt.

Parents still cry and scapegoat company. Kid must of been an innocent victim who didn't know.

Company can however say, it's restricted and your kid faked his age. Therefore you can't sue us.

Mother then yells at father about the kid.

Father awkwardly starts to try tell kid about the birds and the bees.

Kid says he already knows all that thanks to the internet.

Fathers thanks internet, tells the kid to wipe his browser history next time and goes back to ignoring the kids.

What Azza said, but with some sort of insult towards all humanity added in using movie lines at the end.

It opåerates in similar vein to the "Are you engaged in terrorism?" entry visa questionnaires.
Although nobody (even, or rather especially terrorists) are likely to answer positiviely, there is an amount iof legal protection afforded since the responsibility then becomes passed to the fraudulent response.
It also provides an arrow to a potential bow for later reliance.

Pretty much pointless since every child who wants to buy a game or something and it is 18+ or 17+ or something always putting in fake numbers. Pretty pointless and useless imo

There's is one thing it actually protects...

Say some malicious adults wants to trick kids into viewing porn. They create a minecraft server or malicious webpage with porn popups, etc. While the sick **** might be doing it as a troll, an innocent kid who's never seen that yet, doesn't actually want to see it, or who's parents hope their kid hasn't and is completely innocent can then sue the malicious user for emotional harm.

It needs to gives a warning and confirm you are sure you want to watch it first.
