When did "troll" lose its meaning?

Why do people today think it means "anyone I disagree with" even when they don't admit that usage to themselves?

"Troll" never lost its meaning.The typical usage across social media of one who would intentionally bait others for often malicious or otherwise contrite purpose derived from the verb "Troll" which is the act of baiting in hunting or fishing, and so a new colloquial understanding for the noun (of scandinavian/germanic origin - a monster) became popularised as "an individual who trolls others"

Since the original meaning is still in use and accurate, but there has been a change in use of the term to apply in other circumstances, the word has simply gained ADDITIONAL "meaning".

Well trolling on a more casual scale means just to be irritating, but on a social media scale is large scale bullying/abuse etc.

Of course, there is always a solution to trolling, dont make a facebook, twitter, other social network accounts ever, It will only serve to cause pain (my experience anyway)

Trolling can simply mean light jokes, or the other end of the spectrum
