There's frankly no proper definition of "casual" or "hardcore" anyway. They're basically self-identifying terms with not much meaning otherwise.

Yup hardcore gamer banner thesedays seems gamers focused on a few games at one time. Spending thousands of hour to git gud and ignoring practially loads of other games and genres. I personally call them specialist gamers not hardcore gamers, but that is just my opinion.
That's a much better term, we should make that a thing. Personally I love to diversify the games I play. I only play one story driven game at a time and occasionally say, Rayman or Painkiller during. But I like to experience a game and move on the same way you wouldn't only watch one movie again and again.
And tzojesse, I would like to not give a ♥♥♥♥, in fact I don't take it personally but I worry about the effect it'll have on peoples views of the gaming community. It could lead publishers making and marketing games differently, in a bad way, people thinking of gamers as these petty little elitists or worse yet, the next generation of gamers could be that.
I'm curious to know if it's just the pc crowd because I've only been a pc gamer for a year and it never seemed to be a thing before.
There's NOTHING wrong with spending your leisure time doing things that involve devices designed for entertainment.
The distinction between 'hardcore gamer' and 'casual gamer' is a silly one used largely by thoose attempting oto distinguish themselves from or to ascertain false superiority over others and there's no actual definitive border between the two anyway, so any such alleged distinction is moot.
If anything, I would suggest that those who play videogames an extreme amount for extended periods or when it's at risk of interfering with other aspects of their life(style) are perhaps the ones that have more reason to be worried.

Certainly some games take more time to coplete, require more concentration/effort/thought and may even involve spending time reading and investigating various particulars in order to gain a greater insight and perhaps technical knowledge of the mechanics or how to optimise gameplay.
It can be argued, then, that such games are less casual than simpler games.
These games however appeal to some and don't appeal to others. Some don't wish to involve themselves in such activity purrely to play and enjoy a game.
This is not in any way any comparable aspect of gamers nor any shameful attribution.
Just as it's not shameful to prefer Space Inaders over The Hobbit.
They are simply different games for different aesthetics.
