What's wrong with casual gaming?
I am a self proclaimed casual gamer. I don't play games a ridiculous amount anymore, I have other hobbies and commitments that take up my time. I'm not a fan of competitive games and I much prefer a decent single player game. Something like Enslaved, The Last Of Us or the MGS series. But for some reason "casual gaming" is scrutinised by the so-called "hardcore gamers", sometimes to a point that makes me believe these people seriously need to re-evaluate their world views.

So what's wrong with casual gaming and why do some feel there's no place for it or worse yet, like it's something to be ashamed of?

Don't worry, they're honestly a loud minority. Dark Souls honestly appeals to such a niche group of gamers.

A good chunk, probably even the majority still, could still be considered "casual" gamers.

Games have honestly gotten much easier than they used to be, and I think that's where the disappointment comes from in those reviewers. More than likely they're probably old DOOM fans who are just looking through nostalgia - tinted glasses and can't accept change.

Personally I'm going to be giving the open beta a shot this weekend and I will probably have fun with it.

You havent played HItman if you tink all games are easy?

Hitman isn't terribly hard either.

To me it was just a logic puzzle game. I enjoy problem solving and strategy and looking for loopholes in things.

I found it to be very much a thinking game and I came to enjoy doing things to make the AI look foolish.

♥♥♥♥ the bed, you guys replied quick. Well CS is exactly the kind of game I'm personally not interested in. I'm somewhat addicted to Steams review section and a lot of complaints about games (DOOM being the most recent example) are about how they're "casual as ♥♥♥♥" and I just don't get why this is such a bad thing. No one should judge, I just fear these people will affect the industry to a point where everything is ♥♥♥♥♥♥' Dark Souls.

Don't worry, they're honestly a loud minority. Dark Souls honestly appeals to such a niche group of gamers.

I sincerely hope you're right. It's not the games themselves but peoples attitudes to them that worries me. If they are a loud minority then hopefully I am worried over nothing. And I hope you enjoy DOOM, I understand it won't be for everyone but the reaction to it seems to be wildly disproportionate.

And I completed Hitman 2 and 3 way back when on the PS2, stealth games where always my jam but as I said I'm a casual gamer now and don't have the patience to get good at that ♥♥♥♥ anymore.

Hitman 2 was the hardest game I ever played

Apart from Absolution (which I do like) they were always bloody hard games to play well. I don't think I was ever actually good at them.

Takes a lot more brains to play hitman, even compared to other stealth shooters

True, you can just hide for a bit and try again in MGS for example but it has (arguably) a better narrative. It also rewards imagination though which is adds replayability.

MGS was fun but not hitman. Ill take it before n00bcell or n00bs creed though

Nothing wrong with causal games/gamers. I think that people look down to casual gamers because they want to feel superior and irl they are sad little people who are lonely. Causal games in the other hand are fine, nothing wrong with them but I have to hate games that are hardcore but then overtime turn into child's play. When you make a game and people like what it is, stick with the idea.

Ah, Splinter Cell used to be difficult-ish until Conviction which went for a more cinematic approach. It's actually the only SC I like. But Ubisoft have downhill a fair bit.

@ACharacter It could be an insecurity thing. Like they don't have many other skills or hobbies and so they're forced to go ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ with gaming. And I get that about stricking with ideas, consistency is a big thing for me. But then you get the Dark Souls fans that go nuts after the idea of an easy mode was suggested. The other side of that coin.

For me a game like that is easier than these games that require super reflexes and crap.

Ohh hitman can be played all out with reflexes but few lack the combat skills to do so.
