Amended that a bit for better accuracy.
Damn.
See, if you carbonate the water and then flavour it with cola-extract, vanilla, and caramel, it won't taste so bland.
Sorry, just had to throw that in there. Dr. Pepper is obviously the superior brand, which is why Pepsi, the company with the superior business model, bought it. Worldwide, Pepsi is the most popular bevearge except in one area, and it's a great big fat one: McDonald's. People will do anything for McDonald's fries, including drinking Coke's off-brand crap.
But when it comes to taste, which one is better? Sugar doesn't lie and Pepsi-Cola has traditionally had more of it. Somebody already mentioned that corn syrup is used in the US, leading to both products having a different taste here, but I've been more places than just the US.
From the shimmering snows of Iceland to the dehydrating deserts of Iraq and beyond, I have had the chance to taste both colas in a variety of areas and under a variety of conditions.
Of the two, Pepsi is what you want when you NEED sugar and/or have the ability to process it. The taste is richer, more full-bodied, where Coke tends to be a almost bitter in aftertaste.
But that's only when you've got enough water. If you're dehydrated, Coke is the cola of choice. The absence of so much sugar actually makes for a more refreshing beverage. They aren't entirely lying in their ads. Ice-cold coca cola is great. Pepsi only suggests you get supermodels to rub Pepsi cans on themselves. A nice image, but about as refreshing as a mirage. If you're going that route just drink beer, you might accidentally create a supermodel who would let you do that.
Sadly, both sodas will eventually make you thirstier than you before. In lingering aftertaste, Coke wins again because it's not so sticky.
Overall, however, Pepsi is the winner because you don't drink soda to quench thirst or because you're particularly concerned about consequences. You drink it for tasty sugar.
