What's the Connection?
I have a habbit of looking at profiles of people who post in forums. It started so I could look at the games people whose comments I found entertaining or agreed with played to get ideas for more games I might also like. After a while I began to look at profiles of the worst* comments I saw out of a sort of morbid curiosity.

That's when I started to notice something. There were several games they frequently had in common; CS: GO, Gary's Mod, DOTA 2, and Team Fortress 2. Often one or more of those was at the top of their most played list by a wide margin.

Highly competetive games like FPS and MOBA are known to have overly toxic communities to begin with, but is it the competetive nature that causes the toxicity, or did the players bring it with them from outside? Considering how many have the afore mentioned games in common, and how their poor behaviour seems to reach beyond those games and their forums, I'm inclined to believe they brought it with them.

What is it about those games that seems to attract such a low class of people? [Not that all who play them are low class.] Is it insecurity and a need to feel superior over others? Do they need to prove something(to themselves or others)? Are they just terrible human beings?

* By worst I mean stuff like crass, ignorant, abusive, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, wrong forum, or completely unrelated to the topic.

Hard to say really. I used to play Team Fortress 2 and DOTA 2 for a time and the people in both communities were a mix of toxic, hateful people to more calm and quiet types. It really depends on the person.

No idea. I play/ed Mobas a lot. But I never really got into copetetive gamemodes. Just not interesting for me. People get way to butthurt anyways. For me it's more the factor of playing with your friends while having a nice Conversation over Voice-Chat.

Well I think that these are just the most common games on steam. Since there are many people that only make a steam account for CS or TF2, Dota etc.. I would Agree tho that it seems that the more competitive the game is the more toxic the community 'can' be. That's not limited to competitiveness ofc, since there are enough games that have no MP at all and their community is still ♥♥♥♥.

So I think it's not limited to the games that one plays, but more to if they are an arse to begin with.

They want to feel better while playing competitive and throw salt. Takes one to know one.

What a broad, unfounded and biased statement.

Broad? maybe. Unfounded? Not likely. Biased? Nah, not in the slightest.

I know, that was obvious. I was simply disagreeing with your argument.

Yes it is an opinion, but if you read the link I gave you, you would've understand that making a statement by generalizing some things based on his assumption is still a confirmation bias.

Yes, and it can also be called an opinion. Both are not factual.

Which part of it don't you understand? I even said it that it is an opinion. But his opinion is broad, bias, and unfounded.

Confirmation bias is just another way of saying "opinion".

I'm not sure about the others, but as with Team Fortress 2. It is my "most played" game on Steam because I keep going back to it, to playing it with friends and other nice people. I generally stay away from the toxic side of ANY fandom and generally hang out with the nicer, calm people or the creative fans.

I found a few errors in your "theory" but overall you are somewhat correct..

am just kidding idk what is going on..
