Why do scientists use whiteboards or chalkboards in their offices?

I have seen countless images of people writing mathematical equations on a white or blackboard and can honestly not understand it. I'll link some of the pictures I've seen at the bottom, but in general, why do people do this? What is the purpose of it?

Because it's probably less papper when you write on a whiteboard while working in a lab.

Because it's a good way to have your work displayed in one spot, instead of having to flip through a bunch of pages of notes.

I'm pretty sure the whiteboard is a cultural thing among the science community.

Because in science we share, we don't keep secrets. Oh, some uses translucent boards, BTW.

I have a whiteboard on the wall next to me. Theyre very helpful. Lots and lots of notes. Important passwords, game objectives, maybe a short script or something. I lose paper notes too easily and hate the clutter.
