What's wrong with "flame wars" anyway?
I know there's a fine line between heated discussion and dumpster fire, but why exactly do we all accept that any kind of debate or argument is automatically a flame war? I really can't see the issue as long as there aren't any personal attacks, and even then that's the user's fault, not the threads'. It's kind of sad to see threads get immediately locked as soon as it seems like something actually interesting could happen.

Is there anything you can discuss on this forum outside of "what's your favorite game/song/anime/whatever"?

Steam forums is meant for pacifist, at least that's how I look at the moderators behaviour.

So if you want to make argument threads, try here: http://www.debate.org/

We don't accept that any kind of argument is a flame war.

A flame war is, by definition, a series of personal attacks.

Some topics have a proven record of producing flame wars. You cannot talk about politics on the internet without generating a few, for example.

I know what a flame war is, however it has too often become a catchall term for any discussion where not everyone happens to be on the same side.
And just because a subject is divisive doesn't necessarily means anyone discussing it will fall to personal attacks. I understand the need for banning users at times, but banning topics makes an "off topic" forum kind of pointless, don't you think?
Because the mods are left to interpret the rules. For example, the rules say no flame wars, but what constitutes a flame war or an insult is left up to each individual moderator. That creates confusion and gives the mods a green light to do as they please.

They are no actual rules on the forums, just judge Dredd-like mods who deal out death and punishment as they see fit and use the rules as ex-post facto justification for their actions. This acts as a filter for heated and interesting discussions that people actually want to have and leaves the forums an empty wasteland of stupid and boring threads.

Ironically, this might be the one thing we agree on.
Why do we need to debate anyway? Why can't we all be pacifist? Don't you like serenity? It's peaceful.

No, can't say it has.

It doesn't mean every person will, but it means that enough people will to make moderating it a pain. If certain types of threads turn into dumpster fires often enough, why keep them around?

Boring more like. Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I don't see the exchange of ideas as a form of conflict.

As "interesting" as rants about degenerate races can be (I'm assuming you're referring to that thread that was on here earlier about a prominent fascist politician), I think the forum is better off without them.

It's pretty sad if you entertain yourself with conflicts. But then again, it's your preference, as a pacifist I can tolerate it. :)

The reason why some subjects are more "flammable" than others is often because they happen to be more interesting. I could turn this around and ask why would you ban topics that can actually get people excited and passionate?

Afraid I've have missed that one. But then again, what internet thread has ever eluded Godwin's law?
This thread is going to get locked up op. I have a strong feeling about it.
Didn't mean to threaten you, I just have some predictions.
