What's wrong with "flame wars" anyway?
I know there's a fine line between heated discussion and dumpster fire, but why exactly do we all accept that any kind of debate or argument is automatically a flame war? I really can't see the issue as long as there aren't any personal attacks, and even then that's the user's fault, not the threads'. It's kind of sad to see threads get immediately locked as soon as it seems like something actually interesting could happen.

Is there anything you can discuss on this forum outside of "what's your favorite game/song/anime/whatever"?

Boring more like. Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but I don't see the exchange of ideas as a form of conflict.

It's pretty sad if you entertain yourself with conflicts. But then again, it's your preference, as a pacifist I can tolerate it. :)
And I'd say it's rather sad that you see disagreement as aggression. I certainly don't perceive your different opinion as an attack.

why would you ban topics that can actually get people excited and passionate?

You've already said there are issues.

This thread is going to get locked up op. I have a strong feeling about it.
Perhaps, but that would just prove me right. No one has insulted anybody yet, there is literally no valid reason to lock.

A mature person can handle getting excited and passionate without resorting to insults. If you can't, you get banned. It's that simple, or rather it should be.

Why do we need to debate anyway? Why can't we all be pacifist? Don't you like serenity? It's peaceful.
Because not everyone has the same opinions.

A worthwhile thread can handle getting excited and passionate without turning into a flamewar. If it can't, it gets locked. It's that simple, and easier to moderate, too.

You're part of the problem.

A thread is only as civil as its most toxic user. Locking a thread for that reason is like using a warhammer to swat a fly.

A thread is only as civil as its most toxic user.
A compelling argument against threads that tend to generate toxicity, then.
You know what they always said,
Prevention is better than cure.

So basically, a handful of troublemakers or agent provocateurs end up deciding which threads get locked.

Read this, again:

This isn't prevention, this is amputating the hand to get rid of a splinter.

It's more than a handful. Otherwise reasonable people turn bonkers with some threads.

Except maybe it's not a splinter, more of a cancer. So it's worth to be amputated for.
