of course they do, you can get cheap ♥♥♥♥♥♥ ones made in china but the ones you want are with the militairy, try american forces.

Not laughing at you, you remind me of me when I first went into the military. I thought we'd have all kinds of super-awesome imaging devices. What I got were pieces of **** like the ones I'm wearing in my avatar. Sure, they look cool, but they are most definitely not. I could see about 70 feet and only in a 13-degree arc, with terrible picture quality most of the time. Those NVGs need so much light to work well that you can pretty much discard them in ideal conditions.

Thermal imaging devices are not any better, with an added, almost nostalgic touch of 80's pixel hell. The USMC doesn't even get them most of the time, but when we did I mad my m-16 riflemen take them off and give them to the M-249 machine gunners since they were the only ones who could plausibly hit anything using such garbage.

Luckily, during my first deployment I was given the honor of escorting a SEAL team. I may be a Marine, and a damn good one, but next to those guys I'm like a child. With the awe only children normally posess, I was gawking at their amazing gear, and I asked one of them how they got it when we got such trash. He told me "Go out and get it yourself." as he proceeded to tell me where he got all his awesome stuff from. All civilian providers.

Back then it amazed me, though it shouldn't have. I already knew most of what the government ever did was riddled with incompetence, I just thought the military would be different for some unfathomable reason. I got to learn my lesson again providing security for Blackwater, before ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ banned it and it had to change names.

So for the next two deployments, I went out and bought a lot of my own damn gear. Whatever I could afford. Better NVGs, better magazines, a nifty thermal scope, etc...

And that's what you do if you want good thermal imaging devices. Go to some civilian manufacturer like ATN and buy the best ones you can afford. They are much better than what the US government is capable of providing, and amazingly (or not so amazingly) actually cheaper than most of our gear. God bless civilians.

After a thorough review of videos, I have concluded that they look like training films. I remember being shown videos exactly like that almost two generations of NVG/IR tech ago. Yeah, those devices will work that well under ideal conditions, when they're brand-spanking new.

This is how Congress gets convinced to buy lame or stupid crap for the military. No field-testing whatsoever. We've got these Generals and stuff that always like to be on the cutting edge of military technology, and their views are not wrong. Even a small improvement in battlefield technology yields large rewards.

Unfortunately, they go about this in an inefficient way, and even that is not entirely their fault. As with any government agency, the primary concern is simply securing funding from a bunch of disinterested lawyers who have their own agendas, not necessarily in line with those of the military. Some of them honestly believe that war can be eradicated entirely. They are no more competent in managing our affairs than they those in civilian life. Whatever they do manages to take forever, be over-budget, and not work.

That said, I hold to my original advice, go get a civilian provider. If there is an actual physical store near you, they'll let you try out these devices for yourself. Otherwise, just go by the online reviews, especially those of professional troops.
